My first book's been published

Post by muppet hi fi »

If anyone's interested, my first book, co-written by my eldest brother Chris (CD) and my dad, was published this last July 3rd - cruelly, the day my dad died (aged 94). I (along with my younger sister) took care of him these last 10 years. My bro Chris and I wanted to read it to him before he died, but, alas.

Anyway, it's a travelogue (and hopefully much more) about our trip to the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany in late 2007 (following the locales where he saw close infantry combat in WWII as a young [21 year old] newly commisioned 2nd lieutenant rifle platoon leader [a "shavetail" in olde timey Army parlance]).

Some folk have said they literally laughed aloud quite a bit and at times teared up. There's three very distinct voices going on (editing took a couple years), and real first-hand history to be heard/learned about that cataclysm and I'm rather proud of it.

So don't be, as Mr. Vonnegut (or was it JP Donleavy?) put it - a "short-fingered vulgarian". Art for art's sake and money for God's sake! What ho! (paperback and Kindle/Nook/Cobo e-books available for $2.99 US also).

Congrats on the book, but sadly, condolences on the old fella. He must have been a great inspiration to the two of you.

I've no words for the loss of your father.

Many congratulations on the book. When better financial times come, I will buy it.

Condolences on the loss of your Dad, but big congrats on getting your book out. I'm sure it's a fitting tribute to the man, and it sounds like a fantastic trip went into researching it. Good luck with it sir.

Same as others: congrats and condolences. Bittersweet, to be sure, but an effort worthy of a lot of pride.

Make it nine. I read on my iPad, and am maybe a bit cheap, so I bought the EBook. Looking forward to reading it.

Cheers, Jenny! I'm especially interested in your take on the book, from a woman's point of view, as the the thing was written by three dudes [four dudes on the trip], so it interests me how a woman might view the account. War fighting (though not the exclusive domain of men, and generally women suffer as much or more so), tends to be told from men's perspectives.

Anyway, the thing's meant to be about something larger than war - Life, I guess.

Ah, Teddy - I'm so looking forward to you reading it, and hopefully some honest commentary (positive or otherwise), as a pro writer your own bad self.

My stuff was written very quickly and, other than some punctuation corrections, was mainly "first take" (for better or worse. Probably for worse, but at least I got the thing done in its original spirit of memory and feeling).

It is next on my list to read, so I will let you know! I would imagine many of the themes would be universal.
