Greatest Album of 1979 - Preliminary Round 1

A few i could think of like Rust Never Sleeps or the pleasure principle, but the one I'd nominate is Skids - Scared to Dance

The first of two albums they released in '79 and their best song that year, Masquerade, wasn't even on either of them.

I second this one though I might have already seconded something. Either way, while I picked the Buzzcocks to nominate, I almost went with the Skids.

I'd love to lobby someone to back The B-52's self titled album. I relistened to it just yesterday and it really is an amazing collection of nervy detached kitsch that lands right at the crossroads of punk, post-punk and new Wave (I wouldn't even really say pop - that would come later for them). Go back and listen, it's a lot smarter than you probably remember. It's fun with a sinister undertow. And its landmark importance on new wave and alternative can't really be overstated.

Agreed, the 45 rpm single electric version is so much better. I remember having to search record shops to find the import version, it was pretty rare here in the US.

Yeah, I never really enjoyed that version but I could see what they were going for, that Eleanor Rigby-style thing. The b-side version is ace.

Setting Sons used to be my fave, but I've grown to like Sound Affects more.

I prefer Skids personally but i wouldn't argue the case all that vehemently.
