I'm not sure I know how to find out what the longest song on my ipod is, but apparently I have three different versions of Elvis doing a Big Hunk o' Love loaded on mine.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Pex Lives!

Ocsid, "Opening Sweep" (1:15:02). A bit of a cheat as it's soundtrack (actually an excerpt) from a performance art installation from Graham Lewis of Wire and a Swedish artist I can't recall the name of.
Excluding those kinds of single-track works, it's Glenn Branca's "L'Eve Future" (49:09), the first track on his Symphony No. 9 L'Eve Future.
I listen to "Opening Sweep" much more often than is justified, but Branca's … can't recall the last time.

Marquee Moon by Television. 9:58 and yes.
Shortest is probably nervous a breakdown by Black Flag. You didn't ask for shortest song though.

New Order's Elegia, at about 17 minutes.
Yes, I've heard it recently, as it's on my "Favorites" playlist which has about 120 songs on it.

I have a couple Mahler symphonies that are over an hour. After that..."Echoes" by Pink Floyd at 23:29. I believe I downloaded it to try to sync it up with the finale of 2001: A Space Odyssey back in 2005 or something. I never got around to doing that, so I don't know if I've ever actually played it. It doesn't have any plays from 2009 to now. After that, a bunch of live stuff then eventually the Global A Go-Go "Minstrel Boy." Says it was last played 5/12/2014. I couldn't have made it all the way through.
Top 5:
Pink Floyd - Echoes - 23:29
Joe + Meskies - Minstrel - 17:49
Velvet Underground - Sister Ray - 17:31
Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda Da Vida - 17:02
Mars Volta - Tetragrammaton - 16:42
Shortest (non empty space tracks, actual music)
Cody Chesnutt - Black Skin No Value - 0:10
John Zorn - Harmmerhead - 0:11
Modest Mouse - Dig Your Grave - 0:13
Cody Chesnutt - Brother With an Ego - 0:14
John Zorn - Fuck the Facts - 0:14

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I don't have an iPod or any of that shit though I might get one some day.
The longest song I know of is the Guinness Book of World Records longest song, and he keeps adding more to it. He's Chris Butler, mastermind of the fabulous Waitresses, great song-smith, lyricist, guitarist. It's a jolly little song. Except it's not little.

How long is it? Charlie Watts once admitted in 'Modern Drummer' magazine that he couldn't play a drum solo to save his life, that he'd always lose count and interest by the middle-eight, and this is with his various jazz combos, where it's expected!Heston wrote:A Peter Criss drum solo from Osaka in 1977.

Ahem, that's a long solo. One of my brother's saw Led Zeppelin once and fell asleep during Bonham's drum solo on "Moby Dick", but I think there were barbituates involved as well.Heston wrote:3 light years.muppet hi fi wrote:How long is it? 99% of drum solos are too long. The only one I can really enjoy is Ringo's on "The End."muppet hi fi wrote:Ahem, that's a long solo. Re: What's the longest song on your iPod/portable music player?
That is a good one. And if ya dig that crazy jazz jive the kids are listening to nowadays, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and those guys did some super-human stuff. Otherwise I'm not too fond of drum solos in pop songs, although Kenny Jones' breakdown in the Faces' version of 'I'm Losing You' is pretty damn propulsive and keeps the song going.Heston wrote:99% of drum solos are too long.
