Funny/Blatantly Comedic Songs By Legit Artists.

Post by CorwoodRep »

What you got? I guess the hard and fast rule is no blatant novelty songs like Cash's "Chicken In Black."

I got a couple:
Warren Zevon - Hit Somebody!
Warren Zevon - Mr. Bad Example
Grinderman - No Pussy Blues

After Zevon/Cave I completely run out of obvious examples. Are there any good ones? I've heard legit bands do neat covers of really dumb songs, but that's really only funny in context.

Zappa has some pretty funny songs. And some songs that try too hard to be funny.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

the stones have a few comedy songs, "Short and Curlies" "Far Away Eyes"
We reach the parts other combos cannot reach
We beach the beachheads other armies cannot beach
We speak the tongues other mouths cannot speak

Far Away Eyes isn't a joke song. Running 20 red lights in Bakersfield is pretty conventional behavior.

Following up, here's one of his classic "funny" songs:

This might lean too much on the novelty (particularly the rendition of it in this video), but here's the most infamous of the Beach Boys "funny" songs:

NOFX has about a zillion comedic songs. Here's one of my favorites:

And what's probably the greatest song of all time:

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Wait, didn't the Beat Farmers do that one first?

P.S. Speaking of, they have a few songs that almost qualify but I'm not sure if they constitute just plain ol' novelty songs or not.

Yeah, but I first became familiar with the Mojo/Jello version, and it thus remains my standard. You could pick almost any song off Prairie Home Invasion for this exercise, btw.

Addendum: Sorry, pasted the wrong link in.

The thing that's interesting about this exercise is how many funny musicians don't really make it on, per se. Like, Hank III doing metal is HILARIOUS, but those are still basically legit songs. You need the context of what his name and background is and all this other stuff.

Part of that's probably a function of you discouraging contextually funny songs and asking for "blatantly comedic" stuff, right? I was going to mention Crass' "Our Wedding" but excluded it because the joke was all about context.

My goal is songs that stand on their own virtue as being funny, which is tricky, but yeah, needing excessive context spoils the idea.

Obviously, the ultimate answer that combines both contextual humor and the "blatant comedic song" angle is David Allan Coe's X rated material.

Does A Boy Named Sue count?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
