Group therapy. Let's talk unpopular musical opinions.

Post by CorwoodRep »

Preface: Hoy is banned.

I'm not into punk. I'm into the idea of punk, but the only bands that stand up to repeated listens became something else. X was a roots-rock band by their third album, The Clash was whatever the hell they were by the second album, and the Pogues were only punk in the sense that MacGowan did a bunch of drugs and said fuck a lot. I've always understood "punk rock" as more an ethic than a genre - taking huge risks on stage, no matter what you're playing, is "punk rock." Nick Cave plays loud and he's nuts, so he's "punk rock."

The genre itself is not something I'd really wanna be caught dead listening to after, I dunno, 1984 probably. There are punk-y bands I like after that but anybody advertising the fact that they belong to "punk" is just not something I'm gonna listen to. Basically, I only dig about 6 punk bands, but I get obsessive about those 6.

Oh, and I don't really dig the Libertines, though I wish I did. The tunes just aren't there.

P.S. Yo, Brits, are The Libertines "lad rock?"

My musical sins seem to have been fairly well documented of late.

I'm a sucker for folk-pop (lesbian or otherwise) and a lot of other hook-laden guitar pop.

Also, since I assume we're talking about unpopular for IMCT musical opinions I'll add:

-I like post-punk but don't like-like post-punk. It's not a foundational genre for me w/r/t my basic music tastes.
-I could live my entire life without ever reading or partaking in another discussion about the Sex Pistols and die happy.

Is that really an unpopular musical taste around here?

As I get older, the less attention I pay to stuff like post-punk or whatever it is Blixa plays. Frankly, I just need more tunes. If the music isn't hooky I have trouble keeping focused (unless it's somebody I'm just stupid indiscriminate about, like Zevon).

If that's an unpopular opinion, we'll be unpopular together (it'll be like the rankin/bass rudolph, except everyone will be sad if the abominable snowmonster doesn't eat us before the end of the movie)

I love Alice in Chains. And Tori Amos. And Adele. And cheesy mid-80's solo Stevie Nicks.

I also don't like much punk past first wave, and I really don't like any hardcore bands except for Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys. And I really don't enjoy listening to any DK albums aside from Fresh Fruit.

The A-Ha song The Sun Always Shines on TV makes me tear up.

And I don't care how much you people hate the Clash. They are still my favorite band.

Ooh, here's another one: just yesterday I discovered I like Sheryl Crow, or at least her self-titled album. I knew pop-country pretty well in the 90s, and that CD is head-and-shoulders above the other stuff getting played on the radio at that time. It's almost alt-country, and it's impressive anybody was able to make that sound sell back then.

Nah, liking that album doesn't mean I like her as a person or know anything about her beyond the sociopath boyfriends.
