Well, he's the only Beach Boy to win a Grammy. For writing "I Write the Songs." Let that sink in.

He's got a deeper schmaltz well than McCartney. And, he's the only long-term member who still tours with Mike Love.

Wait, Manilow didn't write that? Do all of the yentas know this?

So, I'm trying to compile a "wilderness years" best of, since the topic has come up. Like, can I pull a dozen or so songs from 85 up until the reunion that make for a listenable collection? Maybe I'll do an "ironically shitty" tracklist later. One rule: needs to include at least one track from each of their major albums from that time.

the band, now dominated by Mike Love, were already down the apple pie road to country fairs and Republican rallies. The next LP was recorded at the Maharishi International University and featured a cover of 'Peggy Sue' and a song called 'Pitter Patter' among its delights. Dennis barely appeared on it. Had lunch with a friend who is a Beach Boys fan, and he was telling me that there are active online divisions between Brian Wilson fans and Mike Love fans. I was and am incredulous that (a) there is a Mike Love contingent, that there are BB fans who would actively embrace rather than just tolerate him, and (b) more impossibly, that they would prefer him to BW. That's like quantum mechanics-style counter-intuitive batshittery.
