A quiet little plug for my patreon, where I'm posting the first drafts for my book I'm working on this year about MacGowan's songs, and access to all my writing for an extraordinarily fair $1 a month:

Plus one for the Christy Moore version of Aisling over the Popes', what with it being a song and not a chaotic mess of noise like the latter.
The performance never fails to stun me...

Christy Moore is a treasure.

Aisling (Can I have the Christy Moore version?)
Snake With the Eyes of Garnet
Nancy Whiskey
Gabrielle
Victoria
I'll allow the Christy Moore version as it's awesome.

I haven’t listened to the Popes in a very long time and dont have fond recollections of those albums. All my choices, the inestimable Gabrielle apart, are from the B sides and rarities collection which has some decent stuff among much clutter. It’s the covers that stand out though.

5. Cracklin Rosie
4. A Christmas Lullaby
3. What a wonderful world (with Nick Cave)
2. Gabrielle
1. God help me

Have a vague impression God help me is a Jesus and Mary Chain track. I should check that out but an so used to Shane doing it that I simply can’t imagine anyone else doing it. Seems made for him.

I forgot about Cracklin Rosie, that is a great cover.

Sure is. Nothin at all wrong with original either but Shane gives it a bit more oomph I’d say. Just a better singer than Diamond I think and I think Diamond is a damn good one.

Kinda did dig that jazz album back in the day though not sure how I’d feel about it now. Actually kind of feel I should like Joe Jackson more than I do.

Hello,

Look Sharp is very high on my list. I think it 's the first vinyl album I had to replace due to wear and tear.
