Pretty surprised at the board's general ambivalence to one of my favourite punk bands.
Welcome to my world: Screaming Blue Messiahs, Only Ones, Waitresses, Mink DeVille, Heartbreakers, Midnight Oil, Replacements/Westerberg, Suicide Commandos, etc.

Never remotely liked anything I ever heard by the Stranglers or anything about them. Always thought they were the worst sort of bandwagon jumpers.
They were around from '74 and didn't jump on any bandwagon. Initially called The Guildford Stranglers they played the same shit holes as The 101ers. Joe was considered for the front man briefly after Hugh left the band in 1990. They were angry and nasty sounding from the start they were not influenced by UK punk bands in fact the latter punk bands were influenced by them. They were considered the outsiders of the UK punk scene and they didn't give a fuck. They have always been the most musical of all the bands from that era and would eat most of the other bands for breaskfast. Frankly I'm a little stunned you can't find anything to like about them. But hey each to their own poison. I have all their albums and have seen them play around 70 times down the years. Anyone who wants a challenge I will be most up for doing it.
Challenge accepted. Ive heard a few songs on comps but not really familiar with them.
OK Rev this ten I have hand picked for you.

1. Tank (Black And White 1978)

2. 5 Minutes (Single 1978)

3. Straighten Out (Single double A-side 1977)

4. Hanging Around (Rattus Norvegicus 1977)

5. Peasant in the Big Shitty (No More Heroes 1977)

6. Let Me Introduce You to the Family (La Folie 1981)

7. Who Wants the World? (Single 1980)

8. Nice 'n' Sleazy (Black And White 1978)

9. Was It You? (Dreamtime 1986)

10. Walk On By (Black And White 1978)

Marky pleased you included Nice and Sleazy. Strippers aside some of those live versions have a great groove.

Great track and dodgy strippers at Battersea Park. I still don't know how they got away with that .

I could have picked much stronger tracks the singles and some of the more well known tracks but that seemed a little pointless as you had already decided they are not for you. So I thought anyone could listen to the more wider sounds and ideas the band have produced . Certainly not a one trick pony. Not identikit punk rock fodder.
I reckon Doc and Kory could dig some of the later stuff.
I think they would dig a couple of tracks. I think they might also like "Nosferatu" Hugh Cornwell's first solo outing of sorts.
I bought No More Heroes a couple of times, trying to get into them, but nothing smacked me. I'd be very into a challenge. Should we take it to that thread, or should I just do the ten you first posted for muppet?

I would love to prepare a Stranglers challenge for someone if they fancy some indulgence-free straight up commercial picks. Not necessarily just singles but their more tuneful side.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

I'm more interested in a representative cross-section of the group rather than a focus on one particular aspect. As I mentioned above, I've tried them on a couple times to no avail but I feel like I'm missing something.

Sure, although I doubt it'd be much of a challenge. I am not opposed to them, just never listened.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I would actually be interested to hear your take on them. I'll stick a playlist up anyway, and any interested parties can listen or comment if they want. I just feel like the non-Limeys on here should have some Stranglers in their lives.

They are in that camp with Blondie, Blockheads, Elvis Costello, Boomtown Rats, The Jam, XTC etc.. that churned out some great commercial singles post 79.

I posted 10 for muppet and a different 10 for revbob. Why not try them both. Maybe I'll do another just for you.
