I actually thought about this one but decided it's more an historical polemic rather than about spooks per se, though it does reference mercs in the last verse.
A lot of that history has the hand of the CIA in it, so I figured it was appropriate. Plus, it's a top tune.
Yup, was just about to post that to you. I was just going through the lyrics in my head and thought, yeah, Flex is right, and is probably the best song for this topic. Duh. And agree it's a great tune.

As usual, trying to avoid previous picks:

1. Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft
2. Toy Dolls - James Bond Lives Down Our Street
3. Paul McCartney - Spies Like Us (aka The Inder Special)
4. Tom Waits - Small Change
5. The Clash - Washington Bullets
Brilliant fun song...My hair is blonde...dyed blonde!

1. Bad Detective - Dolls
2. Fingerprint File - Stones
3. Julie's Been Working For the Drug Squad - Clash
4. Gun - John Cale
5. Don't Feel Too Good - Only Ones

Honorary mention: Bowie's You Feel So Lonely You Could Die, which concerns a spy being hunted for assassination but is vague enough to be a layman's downer heartbreaker.
Fingerprint File is a lost classic in my opinion!

Oh shit, how did I miss The Jolly Banker. Greatest line ever: some will rob you win a six-gun and some with a fountain pen.
