What's the criteria for a comeback? A long layoff, breaking up and getting back together, starting a new band, successful album after a flop?
I figure it's like porn, you know it when you see it. Pick your albums and make your case imho.
Okay. No pity masturbation picks, people!

Well solo artists can't very well split up.

1. Wire - Send. Not a proper album, but a collection of ep's and other recordings after they got back together after about a decade apart. Loud, aggressive, and the best thing they've done, imo. Or at least my favourite Wire album.
2. Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent. The return of Youth on bass. A solid collection of KJ songs that captures everything great about the band.
3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend Ascend. First album in a decade and their best one. Less driven by field recordings, more about recognizable songs. Intense and mesmerizing. In a weird way, they make me think of early Velvet Underground, tho clearly less guided by rock precepts.
4. Pixies - Indie Cindy. Wah wah, no Kim, no Pixies. Whatever. This is a mostly solid set of songs that just plain sound like Pixies. Offbeat lyrics and that signature Joey S. guitar.
5. Johnny Marr - The Messenger. Yeah, he's not the best singer even for his own music, but he passes and he's writing and performing stuff that does bring to mind the Smiths.

What if they lose limbs in an industrial accident?

Better yet, the drummer left because he felt he was being replaced by a drum machine (and he was right).

Now if they only had Bernies contact number they could've called him to produce his magic.

Over on the pink flag board, most people do see the Mute years as suffering from a Bernie-esque problem. The songs are good but the infatuation with technology produced lesser recordings. To which I agree.

Top 5 comeback albums. Go!

1. Rock Art and the X Ray Style - Joe Strummer
2. American Recordings - Johnny Cash
3. The Next Day - David Bowie
4. Last Man Standing - Jerry Lee Lewis
5. Return the Gift - Gang of Four

Addendum: Elvis had so many good comeback albums, it resulted in three stooges syndrome and I couldn't pick just one.
Hello,

I like the choices here (perhaps Streetcore for Joe as I feel it's much stronger and deeper than anything else although not really a comeback). I might add King of America by Elvis Costello.

I think it was/is important for bands to try new technology but it needs to be incorporated into the existing sound not to be detrimental to it. Good songs can easily suffer with poor production and poor use of technology.

1. 'One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This' - New York Dolls (2006). Duh.
2. 'Soulfire' - Little Steven (2017). First album in 18 years replete with full Euro tour.
3. 'Crosseyed Heart' - Keith Richards (2016). First solo album in 23 years.
4. 'Blackstar' - David Bowie (2014). Everybody thought he was retired by then. Surprise.
5. 'How the West Was Won' - Peter Perrett (2017). First album in 24 years.

EDIT - honorary mention to 'Rock Art & the X-Ray Style' and 'The Last Post'.
Strong shoes is what we got and when they're hot they're hot!

Most of the Dexy's albums, they tend to have quite a gap between them!

The Professionals new album is good, and the Ruts DC comeback album.

Anyone got the newish Theatre of Hate album (Kinshi)? Worth getting?

Oh yeah, I'd never begrudge them for the experiment, but let's be honest and accept that a shit ton of stuff from the 80s using tech has aged poorly and would have benefited from a more human touch.
