The chart placing doesn't mean anything really though. I think it's great if the Phil version got the song some wider attention with a younger generation. I think I heard the original when I was 5 or 6 years old. Motown/Stax/Stateside singles were huge with Mod/Skinheads of the late 60's so they were some of the earliest records I heard. I think you have an attachment over the Phil version because it's the first version you heard and this happens with certain songs. In most cases I always prefer the original but there are a few that match or surpass the original. I think the Pistols No Fun is every bit as good as The Stooges version and The Clash versions of Police and Thieves, Armagideon Time and I Fought the Law are better than their original counterparts.

That's not bad. It actually reminds me a bit of the Stray Cats version (although I guess every stripped down version is going to sound vaguely similar).
EDIT: it looks like his debut album from 1980 is considered a classic by power-pop types.

That vocal is awful compared to PC's.

Agreed. I don't actually like Phil Collins' voice very much on most of his songs, but he is a very good singer. It's a weird one because I love Turn It On Again and Follow You Follow Me by Genesis and think he sounds great on them, but his voice on most of his solo stuff leaves me cold.

He belts I Can't Dance, a great Daltrey-esque vocal on that one.

Whoa there easy lover! Phil Collins may be able to just about belt his trousers but reaching Daltrey's range never. I thought we had a groovy kind of love but now I fear it's separate lives fo us.
