I would agree there were many more US bands with the punk spirit in the 90's than the UK but then again the US is somewhat larger.

Also, most of England spent the 90s listening to Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, and other bands I acknowledge more than admire. :shifty:

So, per capita, who's more punk?

This. I grew up with this shit, the antithesis of punk. In particular the poisonous Oasis whose retro little England bullshit helped kill rock music in the UK stone dead from about 1997 till the early 2000s until the NME cobbled together a new product to sell to people finally bored of US hip hop. The only band with a flicker of the original hope and drive for me was the early Manic Street Preachers and they were dead once Richie went for a swim. All that's left of "punk" is the dried up dog ends in the form of faux prole geezer "PUNX NOT DED" bands that only Gary Bushell could be proud of, when all the interesting UK punk was made by art students in the first place. The sooner it dies the better.

I like to think Oasis helped music along.
It's bands now like The Kooks & such which are killing it.

Again people here seem to get it so wrong Punk will always exist because it's an attitude not a style of dress, Manic Street Preachers were no more Punk Rock than say Guns 'N' Roses were. Any young band who start up in a garage with limited equipment and next to no money but have a Rock 'N' Roll spirit can be Punk Rock. There are shit loads of Punk bands the world over who only get as far as making a demo or making one 7" single they don't all get lucky and get the backing of corporate giants like Sony.

And as for those art students you mention they created some great music but they did not create Punk Rock, that has been around a lot longer than 1976.

Nice post til you mentioned the early Manic St Preachers, horrible music, unless you're a fan of Guns and Roses.
