If they decide to go that route, I highly recommend a martial art that is practical (hapkido) rather than one that is more showy (karate, tae kwon do). The practical ones have a lot more to do with winning an actual fight rather than in a tournament, because they (hapkido especially) recognize that an actual brawl rarely affords opportunities for high kicks, and is a lot more likely to require a joint lock or getting the assailant to submit after the fight has wound up on the ground.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2019, 5:09pmCool, and glad that it was effective. Not directly—he never knew I was taking the classes. What it really does is instill confidence and discipline, which was instrumental in making me the kind of person that doesn't get bullied in the first place rather than the feckless, timid nerd I was before. I've only had to actually use it twice a few years after beginning, and that certainly dissuaded further bullying as well. But that was a physical demonstration rather than a reputation.

A good buddy of mine is in the process of putting together an oral history of the movie. I've been privy to some of the raw transcripts of interviews, and can say that it's gonna be a hoot-and-a-half of a book.

That sounds great. I loved that movie when it came out. It still holds up brilliantly today and so many others have tried to reach its height but can't touch it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2019, 7:24pmA good buddy of mine is in the process of putting together an oral history of the movie. One of the first videos we rented when we first got a VCR. Loved it as a 13 year old but haven't seen it for probably 30 years. Oft-quoted but I'm wondering if it has dated? Might give it a watch again soon.Marky Dread wrote: ↑23 Apr 2019, 7:28pmThat sounds great. I loved that movie when it came out. Surprisingly no. If anything, you can even better appreciate how much it altered film comedy.

I'm a big fan of aircrash movies and always smile when I watch anything pre-1980 and see where Airplane grabbed the cliche from.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2019, 7:37pmSurprisingly no. If anything, you can even better appreciate how much it altered film comedy.
