Probably true, with an emphasis on slight. Either way, its most interesting element is the connection to the Velvets. If it were made by some schmo who had no connection to the band (would it have even be released?), it would be common to the ten-cent bin in any number of second-hand stores.WestwayKid wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 7:24amI think the thing about this LP is obviously that it has the name "Velvet Underground" on the cover. Had it been recorded under a different name (such as just crediting it to Doug Yule as a solo LP) it would be a pleasant - if somewhat slight - relic of the early 70's.

My local library had it, I recorded most of it on tape then took it back.WestwayKid wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 8:24amI remember getting my hands on this back in 1997/98 from a now (sadly) closed iconic local music shop in Milwaukee. In the days before iTunes and Amazon and everything else - it was hard finding a lot of what I liked and to chance upon this was a real coup. As a university student it was more than I should have spent on something like that at the time - but I could not pass it up.
I've purchased a lot of music in my lifetime, but this is one that stands out thinking back to the time in my life when I got it and what it meant to me (no more listening to The Jam on dubbed cassettes, for one thing)!

I've got two different copies of it. One in the long box and the other in a big hard back book.

I'll stand up for the first ep and album. After that … um, some okay singles. "Speak Like a Child" is especially superb.Marky Dread wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 9:27pmI've got that also. I enjoy the Bots from LA.
Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
It really is a beautiful album. Honestly, there's something about it I find kind of uplifting, whereas something like YA is a little bit harder to listen to. Blackstar is the sound of a man meeting something head on and not collapsing. I find it rather inspiring, in a way.coffeepotman wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 10:58amBowie was a tough one to lose, I still haven't made it through BlackstarKory wrote: ↑10 Jan 2018, 2:42pmThis was the first album I tried to listen to after I heard the news (I later found that I had been listening to Station to Station right at the time or shortly before he died). I agree with this statement, I got the box just for the unreleased Modernism album, which wasn't really that goodDr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 9:31pmI'll stand up for the first ep and album. Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
I got this box set very recently, been meaning to get it for ages. Haven't listened to the Modernism disc much yet. Agreed that the Introducing EP/mini LP is good. First album is good, but perhaps doesn't flow very well due to the instrumentals? My favourite is Our Favourite Shop, I think that hangs together really well as an album. Man of Great Promise is stand out for me. A bit law of diminishing returns after that, I think.coffeepotman wrote: ↑12 Jan 2018, 10:56amI agree with this statement, I got the box just for the unreleased Modernism album, which wasn't really that goodDr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Jan 2018, 9:31pmI'll stand up for the first ep and album. Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
Wolter can attest that I've been on a Swing Revival kick of late, and this record is having a tough time leaving my stereo:
SNZ were really sort of lumped in with the rest of the Swing Revival scene by accident, their influences and style were pretty different other than some coincidental similarity in sound on their big single "Hell". This was the follow-up record to that one, and by my estimate, their finest effort. Going from delicate to rambunctious effortlessly throughout the album. For the last few days, I haven't been able to get enough of this song:

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
