As much as it pains me to say it because I love his music but even by his own admissions Kevin Rowland probably has to take this award.
I doubt anyone has crapped on his mates as much he has has in the name of art.

Is he really that bad? Apart from a few issues early on in Dexys, which I think he regretted and compensated for, I wasn’t aware of too much else in his debit book. Am I missing something?

Fair point. I did read somewhere that Rowland fully acknowledged the lift and Archer was cut in for a writing credit so some reparation was made. Apparently though, that credit was removed subsequently, however the process works, so hard to say exactly what really transpired there.

It wasn't just the song it was the concept. Archer was demoing the strings based sound with Helen Bevington (O'Hara). He played the demo to Rowland who asked if he could keep it. Rowland decides to get his brass section to learn strings (unsuccessfullly) and then hired Helen Bevington to Dexys ala Too Rye Aye.
None of this is denied by Rowland who claims he did not 'intentionally' steal the fiddle riffs for C.O.E. but admits he may have subliminally done it after listening to Blue Ox Babes demos.
The only person in denial is Jim Paterson who has a co writing credit for C.O.E. who claims he and Rowland wrote it and he had not heard the demos. Doesn't mean of course Rowland could have added those parts without Paterson's knowledge of where they came from.

Rowland was just more ruthless and focused and driven than Archer was, which I guess O’Hara realized and quickly jumped ship. Allowing Rowland to keep the demo was a fairly naive thing to do really, like he still wanted and needed Kevin’s approval. Ended up getting a lot more than he bargained for!

But at least Archer ended up making more money from it than if Rowland had never made the steal. I would have thought that would have taken some of the sting out of it at least.

I also wonder about the accusation that Rowland thieved the entire too rye ay sound. If you listen to the early album demos, some from early 81, they’re not far off the finished product so maybe Dexys were already going down that road? Though Kevin always insists Too rye ay is his least favorite of their albums and perhaps that murky history has something to do with it.

Fair points.
By his own admission Rowland was driven and focussed and to that end ruthless. He wouldn't let anything get in the way which unfortunately meant his band mates along the way too. He makes no secret that he made several errors of judgement and regrets it now.
