Oh sure, disrespect the thread that is trying to get people to discuss about great protopunk artists but not the KISS vs. Iron Maiden threads...

Don't disrespect your elders.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

WTF
Gary Glitter and The Glitter Band, Mud, T-Rex, etc. and several other Glam acts were looked up to a lot from numerous early English punk bands (Slaughter and The Dogs, The Clash, etc.) so they can basically be called protopunk since they helped influence punk bands that were to come and also helped create the raw rock and roll sound of it [punk]

And what the hell? What's with all the bashing? I thought most of you were gonna like the idea of this thread. And at least I don't listen to or talk about KISS or Iron Maiden... :shifty:

Limeys are physically incapable of seeing a connection between Glam and Punk.

Wasn't any bashing intended, I just feel labelling Mud and Gary Glitter as anything other than comedy Glam Rock acts is pretty bizarre.

Flex, of course I can see the connections from early RnR to Glam to Punk, but under this premise you can name just about every band from 1956 to 1975.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Let the listing begin! Nah, just kidding.

Not EVERY band though. You wouldn't say Bay City Rollers, would you? There's only certain groups in that era (56-75) and those are the raw and unique (Velvets, Fugs, Stooges, MC5, etc.) sounding ones that sometimes can have punk-like lyrics too (i.e. seditious, rebellious, anti-authoritarian, drug-referencing - critical though, I wouldn't call "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" protopunk since it's more hidden, but "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground, for example, would be because of the drug "referencing" being more severe and obvious and the song itself is more intense, whacked out and fucked up - in other words more than just psychedelic, and raw) So it's the certain bands that have tunes that are plainly awesome and kick-ass but also take it to the top that are considered protopunk (by me anyway), and that's within multiple genres (psychedelic rock, avant-garde, garage rock, experimental, rock, rock and roll, surf rock, etc.)

Again this is getting silly...yes there is a link from the Bay City Rollers to punk it's called The RAMONES who were fans and borrowed some ideas.

I'd probably say the Bay City Rollers are more protopunk than Mud or Gary Glitter. At least they were young and were Malcolm's original business model for the Pistols.

Okay, I could see how you think that; There's nothing punk about them, right (their vocals or music)? But how come one doesn't say so with Bowie? I feel they both have that same type of hard and fast energy.
