Back when this was in steady rotation on Friday Night Videos, I'm sure I thought it was the greatest song ever.
Everyone knows Bucks Fizz did the best version...
Not sufficiently different from the original, so it doesn't exceed any nostalgic pull. (Man, that singer looks like he was pulled out of a catalogue for mid-80s male pop singers.)
Yeah, it was the bigger hit here, so pulls that nostalgic chain for me.
I saw them pre-Talking in Your Sleep. They were pretty good live. I recall the first album being pretty good energetic power pop.
I only know "What I Like About You"—talk about ubiquitous—but I read at one time that they started out on CBGB's scuzzy circuit, so I can see them having a rougher edge earlier on.

They both sound really bland. I think I actually prefer the vocal on the Bucks Fizz version. Fuck why do I come here and listen this dross. That Medulla kid has a lot to answer for!
Another song from my adolescence that just bubbled to the surface, a Madness-esque Canadian band called The Villains.
Not bad, a nice slice of jaunty pop/ska.

Pretty much all Flying Lizards covers are superb in stripping down the original into a minimalist early industrial sound that is nevertheless mesmerizing, but I probably dig "Sex Machine" the most because of how distant it is from the original in sound and feel.

Simultaneously goofy as fuck and earwormy. Any kid who doesn't love the ooga chucka part has grown old too fast.
