The Top-5 on CCR got me thinking of The Band. Born in 1977 - I've always been suspicious of the Jann Wenner endorsed Boomer faves like The Dead, The Airplane, and The Doors. Groups like CCR and The Band have always appealed to me because they bucked the trend: they played rock and roll like it was meant to be played - loose, funky, and full of soul. This clip (they did even better versions earlier in their career) - from their coke fueled end of the line Last Waltz is fantastic. It took a little guts to cover Marvin Gaye - but they more than pull it off: Danko's funkier than shit bass, Manuel's loose barroom piano, Hudson's manic improvisation, Robertson's stinging lead guitar, and Levon Helm's deep in the pocket drums. I haven't even gotten to the vocals yet - led off by Helm's powerful drawl and backed up by Danko.

The film was often beautiful, but didn't capture the grace and emotion of the novel. But it works as material for a music video.

Love this song which is about "The Jarrow March", an event that originated in my birthplace.

The hunger strike came marching south...

There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Nice one. I'm sure I've heard this tune before by somebody. I can hear the Pogues or Richard Thompson or the Proclaimers covering it.

I get a Dylan channeling the Pogues vibe from it. They are in that narrow genre of "Geordie Folk." :shifty:

I don't know if Lindisfarne had any form in the States but here's three great tunes by them for anyone interested. Their hometwown gigs were meant to be religious experiences around here as you may gather if you watch the last clip...

I liked the first two, especially the second (the super hairy guy sounds like YOU in that one podcast I heard that scared the piss outta me  ). The third one - sorry mate. That's bad music in my book. And I thought you didn't like Springsteen. ;)
