for the eyes of Matedog only
I turn 34 today... I was born April 29, 1976, as I got my too-young-to-drive self from Tupelo to Memphis, paid my six bucks and for the first time saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
The show was in the old Ellis Auditorium --I'll be yards from there tomorrow seeing Jeff Beck-- and man, what a good sounding building it was. Everyone from John Phillips Souza to Elvis Presley to Jimi Hendrix to Jerry Garcia to the Alarm played there and the place was sublime to hear live music in.
In 1996 Memphis demolished the building (Bruce was the last to play there, Tom Joad tour) to build a bigger one. I miss the place

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I had the three albums that were out then but was not the disciple I am now. "10th Avenue Freeze Out" at song #2 changed that. I can still see him basically ripping up the stage on that one. I had seen acts like the Who and Kool and the Gang at the time but never ever something like this. This show got me ready for something I was starting to hear and read about, punk rock. I wasn't surprised years later about Joe's descriptions of seeing him in London five months before this show.
About "Incident," I remember thinking the lighting on the song was powerful and how it added to the effect, same with "Jungleland," and "Backstreets" was a monster. I remember thinking, "KISS can't do this."
After "Thunder Road," my mind was made up, I would somehow get down to Jackson, Mississippi, for the show six days away and considered running away from home to follow the band. By the time he and the band got to "Growin' Up," I no longer cared whatsoever that people in Tupelo ridiculed me for liking his music (and wonder now why I ever did).
It's somewhat odd to me, but I remember the songs they did that night with Eddie Floyd extremely clear, specifically the joy that was evident in Bruce's face (I was on the second row). Bruce was just delirious and Eddie Floyd was having a great time, while his face seemed to say, "This white boy is a trip!'

Yeah, but I've never seen Springsteen breathe fire or sing a song from the top of the lighting rig.ChicoHarris wrote:I remember thinking, "KISS can't do this."'
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Yes, yes. We're all looking forward to Bruce's tragicomic descent into senility.Heston wrote:Yeah, but I've never seen Springsteen breathe fire or sing a song from the top of the lighting rig.ChicoHarris wrote:I remember thinking, "KISS can't do this."'

If this was really for Hoy's eyes only, couldn't it have been a PM?Silent Majority wrote:Yes, yes. I hope senile Bruce rerecords Human Touch and Tunnel of Love in the style of a grizzled 1890s prospector.

I hope he records covers of Love Will Tear Us Apart and A Forest. Not because they'll be even remotely good, but it'll force Hoy to buy and try to like them.Wolter wrote:I hope senile Bruce rerecords Human Touch and Tunnel of Love in the style of a grizzled 1890s prospector.
