I don't cleave public and private as neatly as you. Certainly, there was a significant component of in-joke and status going on with the punk crowd, but to divorce it so thoroughly from also shocking their elders or ascribe it to managerial or media manipulation is a little too clean to me. Among other things, youth has long been a time of life for rebelling against and shocking older generations, but seemingly punks are breaking from that pattern altogether? Nah, as with any question of behaviour, the more complex and contradictory explanation tends to be the more satisfying one.

You can have it how ever you like. I never said anywhere that youth didn't have a rebellious nature and suspicion of the older generation that's pretty much a given in any era. Part of the fun of punk was thumbing your nose up at the previous generation and the grown-ups. But those names I mentioned had absolutely nothing to do with any contrived shock tactic like you suggest. There was no punk groups here in the UK prior to the Sex Pistols and Johnny Rotten was just a fun piss-take at John's poor dental hygiene. Rat Scabies got his name while sitting in a rehearsal for the London SS that is pre UK punk. Ray Burns was christened Captain Sensible by Larry Wallis after he was acting the fool. None of their name changes were calculated in any way to be a punk and set out to offend.

If Lydon turned up at 430 Kings Road for his rehearsal with perfect teeth Steve would've probably called him Johhny Posh Bollocks.

As we await proper, full band, versions, here are a couple of demos I worked up with the aid of a USB interface, guitar, and software instruments. I suspect bashing out piano bits killed my keyboard, but these are the sacrifices we make for art. Vox are all scratch, run through a laptop mic, so spare me your cruel jibes.
