I like reading about classical composers. It reminds me of a better time when real music was being created.
Weird that reading about classical composers reminds you of post-grunge, but okay.
Shostakovich=Smashmouth
Mozart=Fred Durst?
That seems about right, taking into account their shared maturity level.

Thanks that was a fascinating read. A truly inspiring and innovative artist.

Hey, I just got directed to this and wanted to post this on here once again:

Cage really changed the way I view music--now I see it more as a form of listening rather than just sound production.

What I really dig about his approach to music. Is that music is nothing more than a series of sounds (noises) and to make those sounds only requires imagination and musicainship is completely a secondary thing.

Early morning thought: Could the solution to all our current problems be that Sting just needs to re-record and re-purpose an old song, pointing out that Trump, the North Koreans, Syrians, poachers, neo-Nazis, and Brexiters need to love their children, too?

We share the same ineptitude, regardless of colors of our hood? (Sorry)

I think Sting could unite us -- in our hatred of Sting. He was very rude to my friend Marcy's dad once.

Ha! No. It's actually kind of hilarious because we have turned it into this inside joke. What really happened is that Sting cut in front of her dad at the bar at some fancy benefit. But it's kind of taken on a life of its own. Now we say it's everything from Sting punched him to Sting tossed him off a 10th store balcony to Sting pushed him into oncoming traffic.

At bare minimum, Sting has made it tougher for me to enjoy old Police records.

Yep. I can't really listen to them anymore.

Final full year of the Vans Warped Tour (they'll be doing some kinda special event in '19 for the 25th anniversary of the fest, but '18 will be the last year as a cross-country touring concern). Crazy. Loved the Fest in high school, felt I'd already outgrown it in college. The fact that I could recognize at most 2 or 3 of the bands the last few years was a testament to the sincere attempt on the promoters part to keep alternative rock new and vital to new generations.

I'll be curious if they try to do a celebratory "greatest hits" lineup for '18, I might have to check it out (especially since Riot Fest doesn't seem to be a Denver event anymore). More likely '19 will be some absurd festival that won't make it outside of a select location or two.

I only went right after I graduated HS in 2001. Similarly, I felt I had outgrown it shortly after. That is a bummer though as you mentioned that they were trying to keep promoting new rock bands and now will not.
