The Pogues' brilliant track NW3 became the coke braindead trash of the Popes' Mother Mo Chroi.

I don’t know where the line is between demo and unfinished studio track, but there’s a lot of Elvis Costello gems from the early days that he later cannibalized (often for inferior songs, IMO).
Thinking about this, and in hindsight it’s not shocking that Goodbye, Cruel World is a dip in songwriting*, considering several Punch the Clock songs are overworked versions of songs from previous sessions. He was running out of steam and needed a recharge.

*the godawful production didn’t help, of course. Even the good songs on it work much better in early demo/live versions.

Definitely, and very different from the other stuff of the time.

It took me a few years to really get into the Damned relative to their peers, but once they clicked, they became one of my all time favorite bands.

I would think they were good for the scene because of their sense of humor and inability to take the whole thing so seriously, even if that got them sort of blacklisted. But the music is balls-out and that's hard to argue with. I might say I would rather have been at a Damned show than a Pistols show at the time.

I love both the Pistols and The Damned. I never got to see the Pistols until Finsbury Park in '96 but I saw The Damned as The Doomed in '78. Those punk gigs at the time were riotous affairs. I've seen The Damned every year they have played ever since.

The recent Mont de Marsan '77 remaster I posted has Captain Sensible creeping on stage at one point letting off stink bombs. Only to be thrown off by the Clash road crew. Then he was taken to hospital. Back to the venue the next day to share some beers with The Clash. Punk camaraderie.

...and Fan Club is indeed awesome.
