Right. It seems telling to me about the band’s songwriting that stuff that was roughly worked out three-plus decades earlier was clearly superior to what they come up with now.matedog wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 5:12pmSo it's the band in 2013 recording songs from 1980? That's a different, but definitely related situation. That's probably even harder to ascertain. Like, this is best modern Wire album, but only because the songs were written back in their original incarnation.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 4:28pmIn the same ballpark, I think, is Wire's Change Becomes Us (2013), which was made up of songs derived from 1980 (when they went on hiatus). The band in 2013 had replaced a member from the original group and the record is almost certainly regarded as the best of the current version of the band. So, should it be considered an album by the current line-up or the better understood as part of the original go-round of the band 30+ years earlier?matedog wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 3:06pmSo this is a specific example, but probably carries over to other albums. Physical Graffiti is my fav Zep album, but is really half new, half outtakes from previous albums. So I'm not sure whether or not to compartmentalize it as it's own thing or half it's own thing and consider the outtakes part of the previous albums. Like do I add "Night Flight" and "Down By the Seaside" to IV when considering that album relative to their others and remove from Physical Graffiti?
This is sort of how I can think of Bruce albums in two ways: the albums themselves or the albums along with their associated outtakes (ie the entire recording sessions).
I'm curious as to how others view similar situations.

An observation: I subscribe to a few music-related Reddits. It's a way of getting news about album releases. But one thing that is really baffling to me is people who post pictures of cd's they've recently bought, acting as if it's a huge achievement. "Finally achieved my dream of owning Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures!" Really? It's been that tough finding a cd copy of UP? And the achievement merits posting a picture of it? Like, you could probably get a copy via discogs for a buck.

We've got workers residing the house right now and their radio is playing "Ice Ice Baby." Even taking his biographical lie out of the equation, it is just so damned limp. Everyone who bought a copy should have to perform penance.

Okay, not quite as cheap as a buck, but it's still not some kind of searching-for-years-in-the-jungles-of-Honduras kind of thing.gkbill wrote: ↑20 Mar 2023, 3:40pmHello,Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Mar 2023, 3:28pmAn observation: I subscribe to a few music-related Reddits. It’s a smart hook/sample. That’s about all I can give it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Mar 2023, 3:28pmWe've got workers residing the house right now and their radio is playing "Ice Ice Baby." Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

And it gets tiring very quickly. Mind you, I feel the same way about "Under Pressure."matedog wrote: ↑20 Mar 2023, 6:12pmIt’s a smart hook/sample. Yeah. It's like a crappy Paul McCartney song. No that's not entirely redundant.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Mar 2023, 6:27pmAnd it gets tiring very quickly. Everyone who had Gira self-identifying as a pink poodle, put up your hand. (This is, as far as I know, part of the promo for the new album, to be released in late June.)

Hugely lauded but never got it myself. A bit like Heroes, another massively overrated Bowie song.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Mar 2023, 6:27pmAnd it gets tiring very quickly.
