I walked past a poster for the upcoming Elton John bio that I obviously have zero interest in, but I was certain in a second of something. The Elton John forums are about to have an influx of young girls joining and getting very heavily into the music. They'll say that the albums are great but there are some that they personally prefer to hear the Kingsman dude sing. And some fifty five year old Elton John fan will yell furiously at them. Another will tell that person to calm down, they're just happy that a new generation is looking into Elton John's back catalogue beyond the famous singles which they all hate. An uneasy truce will eventually settle onto that online community.
This has basically been my experience as a punk fan since middle school. I imagine this is the case for many women. I have so many record store stories. So many. I imagine Mimi does as well.
Rule #1: Fans are assholes.
Rule #2: Male fans are even worse.

Status politics in fandom is wretched, taking a common joy into an excuse employ hierarchies and shaming. It is, frankly, one of the more appealing aspects of this place, that no one seriously tries to assert superiority of fandom based on some convenient criteria.

You would say that. The Clash barely played in Canada. I live in England where they played many times.

I was alive when the Clash existed—can you say that? No, I didn't think so, you wannabe. I bought CtC when it came out. I experienced that disappointment first-hand. You only know that album as a joke, not an immediate loss of $9.99 (plus tax!).

I was into the Clash before I was even born in 1971 because I could predict their rise from the womb. YOU ARE BOTH POSEURS.

I almost posted “at least he joined after their Classic period,” but even I can’t pretend they were ever actually good.

He's been replaced by a guy from a Manowar tribute band. Yeah I'm shocked such a thing exists let alone that Manowar still exists.

I was in the original Clash and left to form a new band with Keith Levene. I'm still waiting for him to turn up for our first rehearsal.
