So, the tape collection talk on some other thread got me a'thinkin - there were one or two spots in my old and now departed tape collection that I still had meant to pick up on cd. So, I decided to do it. Both albums are now out of print, but thanks to the magic of the internet I was able to acquire cds nonetheless. Here's one, I'll upload the other when it's done, uh, uploading:

I used to love Unmarked Helicopters, I'd forgotten all about this album.

When this came out, I was an X-Files fanatic, and I totally loved this disc. It was the first I'd heard of most of these artists, except the shitty ones of course. Actually re-downloaded this one for nostalgia a while back. The SC track is cool, and the Nick Cave one is incredible.

At the time I wasn't really into music but I really enjoyed the album, I'll definately listen to it, as you say, for nostalgic purposes.

Yeah, there's definitely a nostalgia factor but I was surprised at how much the album holds up on its own. Not the greatest tracks from any of these artists, but put all of Screamin Jay Hawkins, Elvis Costello (with Brian Eno no less), Meat Puppets, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Frank Black, and R.E.M. with frickin' William S. Burroughs together and that's not a bad collection of music. Even the tracks from the lesser artists (the SC track was mentioned as a standout) aren't too shabby.

Definitely a product of its time (1996), but I think the thematic element of the comp makes for a little more interesting listen than some other discs released at the time. It's a fun album. This has been my attempt to convince those that won't download it for nostalgia to give it a listen.

I think what's good about it is that it was selected by Chris Carter (if I remember correctly), so it has that personal feeling rather than a lot of cash-grab tie-in albums that are essentially major label showcases with little thought put in. Also I've read that Carter is a huge Pixies/Frank Black fan.

And yeah, he must be 'cos he's got that character in one episode called Frank Black, he's also in Millennium I think.

I have the EC track on All This Useless Beauty. It's not stellar, but it's nice enough. It helps that I don't necessarily hate late-period EC like a lot of people seem to.
