No. I think it's more a case of John Gray being in the recording studio when John Lydon did his vocals and John Gray taking the piss and trying to put him off.

The song isn't about John Gray. I think the lyrics are clearly aimed at Malcolm with lines such as "Bourgeoisie Anarchist" and "Your alter-egos a moron".
Related question: Whatever happened to Gray?
I can't remember where I read this but I believe John Gray went on to become a teacher.😉
Whoa—most unexpected. I did my Sex Pistols lecture today and, of course, had to mention the four Johns as part of Lydon being "discovered," and realized that I had no clue whatever became of Gray.
When PiL were starting up and before they had settled on the name. Sounds weekly music paper did a feature on the soon to be band. Keith Levene didn't turn up and the front cover showed Lydon, Wobble, Walker and John Gray. I always thought that was cool John simply getting his mate on the front cover of a music weekly.

Best looking of the four Johns based on that photo.

I suppose technically it's five Johns as there is John "Rambo" Stevens as well.

Was he part of the original group, too?

He was Johns mate early on but had joined the army. The whole gang of Johns is a bit of a myth though really. It was only either Lydon, Wobble and Gray or John and Sid. They didn't all hang out at the exact same time. It's just that they all happened to be called John.

I suspected it was a bit of a myth. It makes the story better that there's this gang of Johns forcing their way into the narrative.
