Just listened to The Hold Steady's last album, Stay Positive, and in the opening track "Constructive Summer" the lyrics go like this: "Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer. I think he might've been our only decent teacher.
Kinda cool. The album itself is kinda "early-Springsteen -like"... Worth ckecking out...
The Hold Steady hails Joe Strummer
Re: The Hold Steady hails Joe Strummer
I'm listening to it now. It's different from the other albums. There is more theremin, banjo, and mando. I'll have to give it many a listen to get a good feel.esmark wrote:Just listened to The Hold Steady's last album, Stay Positive, and in the opening track "Constructive Summer" the lyrics go like this: "Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Well I like it... it's getting there... Could be there best one so far, and not just 'cause the Joe line. Sounds better.... I think.....

I gave it a listen and was 50/50 on it, maybe a few listens as you say.

I bought the advance off iTunes a few weeks ago (a first for me) and played it to death at work for the next three nights in a row. So much so that I hadn't listened again until last night... I think it might be their best album so far, but Separation Sunday is still my sentimental favorite.

I haven't heard much by The Hold Steady before, but I had to check it out because of this. The album sounds good.

Big fan of this song (Constructive Summer). Nice youtube video for those who haven't heard it.

After a few listens, not strong enough. Vocals didnt have 'it', perhaps a little harsh, but I compare to Strummer/Bowie.

Hey, mandolin and theremin were my first two instruments.matedog wrote:I'm listening to it now. It's different from the other albums. There is more theremin, banjo, and mando. I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Theremin is such a quasi-instrument. Too many people buy one just to make kooky sounds.eumaas wrote:Hey, mandolin and theremin were my first two instruments.matedog wrote:I'm listening to it now.
