A gang of high-profile musicians including Lou Reed, Pete Doherty and Shane MacGowan is taking to the stage rather than the high seas to perform some old-timey sailor's songs.

In 2006, a bunch of rockers took time out of their schedule to help Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski record two CDs' worth of traditional sea chanteys, dubbing it Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys and handing it over to Anti Records to produce. Now, another bunch of rockers is slated to perform the songs in England and Ireland this month. With three shows (July 18 at Dublin's Analog Festival, the Sage in Gateshead July 24 and July 28 - London's Barbican) on tap, a horde of big names are set to pretend to be pirates and marauders of the sea. The lineup for each show includes:

Lou Reed-Dublin
Martha Wainwright- London
Pete Doherty- London
Robyn Hitchcock -London , Gateshead
Ralph Steadman- London
Shane MacGowan - All three shows
Neil Hannon - London , Dublin
Chris Difford - All three shows
Kathryn Williams - Gateshead
Tymon Dogg- Gateshead
Ed Harcourt - London
Rachel and Becky Unthank - Dublin and Gateshead

Lou Reed doing pirate music?
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

At first glance I misread this as "Gore Vidal"--which would've increased the awesomeness tenfold.

I wish that Id sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailors suit and cap
We reach the parts other combos cannot reach
We beach the beachheads other armies cannot beach
We speak the tongues other mouths cannot speak
