The thesis presented in the article that WBTCORAR has only been hated since an article in the aughts is flawed as fuck. It was vocally hated by a lot of people from day one.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 3:21pmNo, you weren't, Lord Wrongingham.Heston wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 3:13pmMe and Inder were right all along...

Also, the "defense" is largely just "even the worst songs can have an interesting element or two" which, sure.

The stuff about the pedal point and build-up of tension is spot on. When it reaches the "Marconi" line it explodes like a shuddering orgasm. Glad to see a musical expert agrees with me.

Plenty of clever musical bits in Steely Dan and any given shitty prog album, but the songs themselves are largely trash.

It was considered a contender for worst song of the decade even as it was charting. Exactly Id dare say all of these songs while getting a lot of hype amd promotion were viscerally hated by a large number of the human population that heard them. The fact that came to be more universally hated later on was just a matter of more people coming to their senses and/or the fact if a pile of shit is presented properly will be valued by some people.Wolter wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 3:23pmThe thesis presented in the article that WBTCORAR has only been hated since an article in the aughts is flawed as fuck. This line really stuck out to me:
Ok perhaps. But that doesn't defacto make it good or redeemableIt was a totally well-assembled song. It had a verse and a bridge and a chorus

I'll admit to enjoying "Barbie Girl" as really goofy bubblegum kitsch.

Me too, and the lyrics are quite dark as alluded to in the article.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 5:34pmI'll admit to enjoying "Barbie Girl" as really goofy bubblegum kitsch.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them dark, but they can be interpreted more wryly, almost like a snarky response to Madonna's “Material Girl.”Heston wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 5:38pmMe too, and the lyrics are quite dark as alluded to in the article.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 5:34pmI'll admit to enjoying "Barbie Girl" as really goofy bubblegum kitsch.
