I dunno, you could probably file (pulls song out of the air) Somewhere in My Heart by Aztec Camera under that genre, that's a pretty good song.
I think Flex meant something that actually played on an American adult contemporary station. Like Gloria Estefan or Phil Collins or Lionel Richie or something. Aztec Camera was too fringe for that audience.

Red Light Spells Danger is one of my favourite vocal performances of all time, though admittedly, that wasn't "80s Billy Ocean", which is a different beast altogether.

On your point above, I didn't know it wasn't a big hit in the US, it's still an FM radio staple over here.

Aztec Camera is not AOR. Not even a little.

and Billy Ocean should get AIDs and die.

Have you actually heard the Love album? It's more AOR than Dire Straits.

I won't say "Love" sucks shit. It's pretty weak compared to the first two AC albums, but it's a monster compared to "Freestonia" and "Dreamland." Christ, until his stripped down albums under his own name, Roddy Frame was showing Johnny Marr how to piss away talent.

Love was bad and then they got even worse on later albums. Quite a bummer.

Minor blip of partial hopefulness on "Stray," but yeah—downward spiral. It was painful loyally, unflinchingly buying everything Roddy put out because I knew he couldn't have completely lost it, and then getting rewarded with dreck like "Freestonia." His last two albums are pretty damn good, tho still nowhere close to High Land or Knife.

How about the "80s mainstream radio friendly AOR" genre?

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
