Opening with an organ emanating from the bowels of hell and anguished, howling backing vocals, Rum Shebeen’s debut single proceeds to recount a devilish nightmare of drug highs, comedowns and remorse.
Turns out that amidst the paranoid fears of bloody bank notes and meeting your mother whilst on a binge, hell also features a particularly bouncy brand of raggle-taggle ska and twisted carnival music. The South London five-piece have much in common with the manic folk of New York gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, but instead of Balkan influences, Rum Shebeen look west to the Caribbean, like a latter day Specials.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Got the single in the mail today and promptly spun it. Very, very kickass. I approve of this music and this band.

Went to see them for a second time at the Brixton Windmill the other day: the gig was shambolic as they argued with the sound guy all night (the most incompetent sound guy I've ever seen, incidentally -- you couldn't hear anything except bass and drums) and the frontman had a Terry Hall ca. Fun Boy Three 'do. The set was mostly new stuff on electro-acoustics. What little we could make out in the audience was pretty good, though.

You should have taped the show and them distributed the recordings as "drum n bass remixes" of Rum Shebeen songs.
I want to see this band. Inder, bring them to Colorado. I'll give you... 5 cookies if you make it happen.

They might get on a festival bill at some point, but I can't see them touring NA anytime soon. They don't even have a record deal! They were absolutely brilliant the last time, though -- high energy and a generally a great time.

5 cookies to fly me out there to see them?
I can promise you, these cookies will be highly acceptable.
