Stand up recs

Post by matedog »

Alright guys, I have to make an emergency 24 hour trip down to LA on saturday/sunday (no, I'm not going to try to win Marlene back) and I need entertaining bits for the drive. What do you recommend?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Patton Oswalt.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.

Lewis Black is also good, tho his earlier stuff is markedly better.

RE: Patton Oswalt.

Listen to the first album, Feelin' Kinda Patton, then IMMEDIATELY listen to 2:22, which is the unedited version. It's so much funnier it's unfathomable. It's dirtier and more organic and you can literally hear him slide into drunkenness.

The more I listen to Patton Oswalt, the more I like him, by the way.

The more Billy Joel posts here, the less charitable I am towards his oeuvre. :hmph:

That he's one of the ugliest thalidomide-baby looking bastards in show business somehow improves his standing with me. I'm surprised that I think this now, but for stand-ups, I like him more than Cross, if only because Oswalt has a definite humility about him whereas Cross is a smug prick. A funny one, obviously, but there's a certain contempt for his audience that always nags at me. By the 90s, Carlin was rather aloof in his connection with the audience, but that was as much because he had professionalized his act so much—he was performing, not just doing his batch of jokes.
