Flex's Ultimate 25 Days of Christmas (Songs) World Cup: Round of 17 - Greg Lake vs The Beach Boys

Post by Flex »

Okay, for the round of 17 the seeding works thusly: highest vote getter in group a gets lowest vote getter in group b, second highest gets second lowest, etc. Same goes for Group C and D. I'll note if I had to change any match-up for some reason (I want to avoid nominations from the same person squaring off against each other for as long as possible, mainly).

The voting is simply now. Just vote for the song you want to see advance. This poll will run until Thursday evening.

I don't have particularly strong feelings about either of these, actually. Abstaining.

But what if I hate both songs?

I'm not keen on the BBs song either, but … Heston.

Ive been voting since I was 18 so Im a bit of pragmatist. I'd still like a 3rd none of the above option.

Imagine a world where Heston's choice wins and he proclaims it proves … something that it really doesn't. You have the power to deny that dystopia.

I finally sampled both, no way Im subjecting myself to full listens of those. The BB song is pretty much what I expected (lyrics about xmas instead of girls/beaches/surfing/cars), the Greg Lake song was worse than I expected.

I'll be voting for the Beach boys obviously. A fun, charming song that is indebted to the same music that would later go on to inspire the Ramones and other first generation punk rockers. Am I cheeky enough to suggest that this represents something of an early proto-punk Christmas classic? I also think some of the background - a tense and even abusive recording session - adds a layer of appreciation as reflecting one aspect of the season: the ability to transcend difficulty and hardship to create moments of peace and joy. A hearty "yes" vote.

The Greg Lake song mostly reminds me of the existence of prog rock, which can't be a good thing.

Prog or not aside its just a boring ass song. Maybe he should have gotten Rick Wakeman to bring in his keyboards to liven it up a bit.
