I think I typically place Goat's Head higher than many, but I really like that LP. It suffers critically because it follows a run of 4 incredible albums. That said, it's good. I think it's a farewell to the first golden age, as there is a sense of melancholy and reflection not heard before. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll ushered in the age of the big business Stones that carries on through today, but there was still an innocence on Goat's Head, it had one foot in the past and there is a wistful goodbye to the days of Andrew, Decca, Brian, Ruby Tuesday, and so on.matedog wrote: ↑01 Aug 2022, 10:43amBlue and Lonesome is pretty striking how good it is for how late it is in their career. A covers album, sure, but way more inspired than I had expected. I give Sticky a slight edge over Exile as well. Probably same for Bleed and Beggars. I might rank Black and Blue a little higher since I really dig the deep cuts on that one.WestwayKid wrote: ↑31 Jul 2022, 2:59pmDid we ever do the Stones? I'll have a go, but starting with Satanic Majesties - as trying to figure in the UK versus US nonsense muddies the waters too much for me.
1) Sticky Fingers
2) Exile on Main St.
3) Let It Bleed
4) Beggars Banquet
5) Some Girls
6) Goat's Head Soup
7) Their Satanic Majesties Request
8) Tattoo You
9) Blue & Lonesome
10) It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
11) A Bigger Bang
12) Black and Blue
13) Voodoo Lounge
14) Emotional Rescue
15) Steel Wheels
16) Undercover
17) Bridges to Babylon
18) Dirty Work
I think Sticky and Exile are so, so close. Same with Let It Bleed and Beggar's for 3 & 4.
If I was going back a little further - I'd say Aftermath slots in just ahead of Some Girls, Between the Buttons just in front of Goat Head's Soup.

I'd have to go with:WestwayKid wrote: ↑01 Aug 2022, 10:32amManics:
The Holy Bible

Journal for Plague Lovers
This Is My Truth...
Futurology
Generation Terrorists
Rewind the Film

Send Away the Tigers
The Ultra Vivid Lament
Gold Against the Soul
Lifeblood
Resistance is Futile
Know Your Enemy
They don't have (in my opinion) a bad release in the lot.
The Holy Bible
Gold Against the Soul
Generation Terrorists
Everything Must Go
Then the rest are much of a much where nothing truly is bad but nothing truly stands out for me.

Did I do Roxy already? I can't remember:
For Your Pleasure
Country Life
Avalon
Siren
Roxy Music
Stranded
Olympia
Flesh and Blood
Manifesto
I'm including Olympia, even though it's a Bryan Ferry solo LP, because it was originally intended to be a Roxy album and features Eno, Manzanera, and MacKay.

Wouldn't say I'm at all familiar with their output but i did buy Flesh & Blood upon its release and played it to death for some time. Some fine tracks on it, couple of really great ones.WestwayKid wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 3:29pmDid I do Roxy already? I can't remember:

The singles off it are top class, but I'd say the album was probably a bit commercial for fans of their earlier more avant garde stuff.WestwayKid wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 4:41pmSame Old Scene off of Flesh and Blood is one of my fave Roxy tracks.Low Down Low wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 4:10pmWouldn't say I'm at all familiar with their output but i did buy Flesh & Blood upon its release and played it to death for some time. The flaw is that the Peel version of LWTUA is a wet fart. Awful.
Anyway, Still belongs at #1.

Yeah I agree. Still can't get my head around why that track sounds so weak compared to the single.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 6:30pmThe flaw is that the Peel version of LWTUA is a wet fart. Awful.

Re: Ranking the Discographies
I remember seeing the video and loving the song immediately. Couldn't acquire the proper single—shit was hard living out on the tundra, man—but I did get the second Peel Sessions ep with that on it. And I was crestfallen. I think any chance at a happy life died then and there.Marky Dread wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 7:11pmYeah I agree. Re: Ranking the Discographies
You're correct of course. But I was just having fun as it's such a small catalogue.
