It might be for the USA but in the UK a place can only be classed as a city if it has a cathedral.
Is that true? If so, that's a neat criterion.

In my home province, the standard of eligibility for city status was—get this—a population of 5,000 people. Rural life …
Yes it's mostly true. There are 13 cities without a cathedral and a number of towns with a cathedral. This used to be set in stone so to speak until some local councils decided to bend the rules and apply for city status. Cities get a much bigger yearly government grant than towns.

Matey and I are starting a Prog Punk band called Oakland.
Wait what? I'm not good with odd time signatures.
You better start practicing because I'm in too.
Your Oakland name is Temescal Tony. You exude sounds inspired by pasta con sarda, have a white afro, wear elvis sunglasses, and say things like, "Awwwww that's spicy!".

Yeah, that's the whole point of Saskatchewan's low population requirement for city status—access to certain funds. As is, I don't think there are more than two cities with more than 100K people (at most three). Totally about bureaucracy and government funding.

I was gonna say, Sunderland has no cathedral yet became a city in 1992.

I live in a suburban “city” with a population of 29K right next to a “village” with a population of 33k.

Just had lunch with a friend who challenged me to come up with a longer list of bands named for cities than his (I won by two). No combinations like Hanoi Rocks or New York Dolls, only the city name. Here's what I came up with on the fly:
Chicago
Boston
Toronto
Chilliwack
Berlin
Phoenix

Others?
Pity it's only the city name because Sydney Devine was my first thought.

Yeah, when my friend posed the question, it wasn't with the idea of city per se than any, I dunno, is municipality open-ended enough?

(We also tried it with states, nations, and continents, but it wasn't as interesting.)
