Somebody Explain Kate Bush to me

Post by Inder »

I tried listening to Wuthering Heights for the umpteenth time and I still don't get it. A lot of pfaffing about and being too-cute-by-half over mid-70s AM piano music.

It's got a sinister Pop Culture For Tories vibe to it, too.

Try Babushka or Running Up that Hill.

Gotta say that I'm mostly with Inder here. I don't dislike her by any means—and I quite like "Running Up That Hill" and "Experiment IV"—but the adulation she receives tells me I'm not hearing what others do.

edit: I really and truly dislike "This Woman's Work." Maybe the lyrics are wonderful, I dunno, but the sound is so grating I can't flee fast enough.

I like some of her early material but do suspect her reputation is somewhat exaggerated because of the mysterious and aloof persona she has cultivated, at least partly anyway. Remember listening to Aerial when it came out a few years back, massively hyped and acclaimed but I couldn't detect any significant musical value in it whatsoever.

I like the early stuff but can’t say I know much if any of her later stuff but agree with Low Down her reclusiveness added to her reputation.

Whoops—I thought you were making a joke about not liking to do housework (i.e., "women's work").
