The Crap Lyric Thread

Post by 101Walterton »

Following on from WestwayKid's comment in the crap song thread regarding the Billly Joel lyric "making love to his tonic and gin" in Piano Man I thought about other lines in songs that are really annoying.

There is the obvious one in Kung Fu Fighting: "in fact it was a little bit frightening"!!!!

But the one stuck in my head (no idea why) is from Moonlight Shadow: "4 a.m. in the morning"!!!
When else is it 4 a.m. FFS.

Any more crap / annoying lines in songs?

One that has always bothered me a little is Narcissist by The Libertines... specifically the 'wouldn't it be nice to be Dorian Gray, just for a day' line.

I understand that Dorian was a narcissist so I get what they're saying but I can't help but think that the main thing about Dorian Gray is the picture. And therefore being Dorian Gray, just for a day, is incredibly pointless.

Here's one for you 101. " I catch falling cans of baked beans on toast, technology is the most" from the brilliant "In the Crowd" by The Jam I don't think it's crap in fact I like it but it makes no sense. Cans of baked beans yes but on toast in a can well that would've been cool in 1978. One of my songs and when "Away from the Numbers" fades in and out at the end it's just awesome.

Haha I have sang that line thousands of times but never thought of that.

To be fair I think Weller is being deliberately surreal with that line, as it fits the general mood of the song.

"Can't complain, mustn't grumble, help yourself to another piece of apple crumble"

Excruciating line from ABC in the otherwise good, "That Was Then But This Is Now."

That always made me laugh. Slightly off on a tangent, but I do like that second ABC album.

I hate when a lyricist tries to wedge together a rhyme by tossing in an extra syllable. One that comes to mind is the opening lines of Belle & Sebastian's "I'm a Cuckoo" which goes "I'd rather be in Tokyo, listening to Thin Lizzy-oh" and every time I hear it - I cringe. Tokyo and Thin Lizzy don't rhyme. I'd also like to throw The Killers under the bus (and I actually don't mind them), but the lyric "Are we human or are we dancer?" is horrible.

No disrespect to the great Thin Lizzy - but..."Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town." I think we know where in town the jailbreak is gonna happen - the jail, right? ;)
