We pretend because of the super archaic concept that songwriting is lyrics and melody—nothing more.
More so, it's the continued elevation of the idea of individual genius, which sees the group (the social) as a detriment. The genius rises above the ordinary and thru force of will and inner ability creates. Human beings as divine. All the stuff that happens afterwards complicates if not ruins the great, singular idea of one amazing person. The history of art becomes much different if we think in terms of the social rather than the genius.
Back off, or I'll blow the roof off—with sound!

Yeah it makes a cool story I guess, but it’s not real. On that same note I definitely think Bowie should have been splitting everything equally with whatever band he had on whatever record.
WWK: I feel confident we haven't heard the last from Dr. Harvey Camel.

Bloody hell over analyzing this. One bloke scribbles on a piece of paper and then shouts while the others bang and bash stuff.

All these so called genius writers that right down a load of nonsense then cut up the words in a different order.

Bah go get a real job.

I guess every band / songwriter has a different way of doing it from developing a riff, a couple of lines of verse or chorus or even just experimenting with a new instrument.
The other end of the scale is someone like Elton John who gets given a sheet of lyrics (full credit to Bernie) but then creates a song from scratch.
Didn’t Mercury have the whole of Bohemian Rhapsody worked out in his head?

I think Freddie did have the bulk of it worked out. I think a band should share the royalties. If they are the band that are responsible for the recording. The Pistols shared the royalties which is great, Rotten would've been nothing without Cook, Jones and Matlock.

It’s long past time I switched to my second choice of instrument anyway. How much do you think vibraphonists get?

A moderate to serious beating, I would guess.

Time to give this ole' thread a bump.

If you worked for a record company and could reissue the back catalog of any band, who would it be and why?

I'd love to have a go at reissuing the back catalog of The Church. Their catalog is scattered across several record companies and has been reissued in fits and starts. First task would be obtaining the rights to reissue everything. Next step would be cleaning up the sound. Like many recently remastered albums, the ones I've heard have been compressed. They're a band that sounds excellent on vinyl and I'd try and pull that warmth out. No bonus tracks. Honestly, I'm not always a fan of bonus tracks. Save those for the deluxe edition. I like an album as originally issued. I also like including as much original artwork and packaging as possible. In the case of a band like The Church, decent liner notes are a must. I'd want to tell the story of each album.
"Geoff who takes kids camping is dead all the boys except Rusty are missing." - revbob
"Tom checks the ingredients on "Uncle Pusher's Old Timey Cocaine Filled Cider" - Silent Majority

Playing to the home crowd here, but I'd propose deluxe editions of the Clash catalogue, each studio record supplemented with one or two representative live discs. For a band who reputation rested in no small part on their shows, it seems the proper way of approaching the albums.

The other would be cleaning up and overhauling as much as possible Wire's Mute albums from the 80s. Good songs hindered by 80s production. Even replacing all the midi drums with real ones would go a long way to improving those records.
Back off, or I'll blow the roof off—with sound!
