Music opinion/question of the week...

Post by WestwayKid »

Prog Rock: good, bad, depends?

I would say I definitely "hated" it as a snot nosed teen punk, but I've softened my stance on some Prog bands as I've gotten older. My cousin convinced me to check out Yes a few years ago. Jon Anderson was no longer in the group...but they played 3 albums from start to finish. I didn't think I'd like it, but I kind of did.

Depends. There's some truly awful stuff out there under the prog rock monicker, but that's the ELP shit I can't stand. King Crimson and Hawkwind alone are proof that the genre can rule, tho.

I was going to mention ELP as one of the prog bands I really hated. I think it can be very inventive and interesting, but then it can be very indulgent and boring. I like some of the stuff Genesis did when Peter Gabriel fronted the band - very imaginative and weird - but not boring.

I'm a big synth guy but wow do I hate ELP.

I guess some Yes and early Genesis is OK. To be honest, I much prefer German prog ("krautrock") to the British stuff.

Give me Can over any of that UK stuff (even King Crimson).

It depends greatly on the artist and the definition. eumaas mentioned Can, which I love, and others have cited ELP, which I can't stand. I'm generally favourable to "art rock," which is a kissing cousin of prog, so, yeah, depends.

I'd say ELO were a pop band though I don't know all their songs. I don't like Prog at all.

There's an early Genesis song called "I Know What I Like In My Wardrobe" which I really like. Apart from that everything I've heard from the Gabriel-era has been horrific.

again, I don't really care for that stuff. I am just being conciliatory.

I won't say any single style or genre is all bad anymore. I favor some over others and tend not to favor a lot of the prog Ive heard. King Crimson has been mentioned and I do like some of their stuff. My brother went thru a pretty serious prog rock phase and as he was older and bigger and we shared a room I've heard my share of it. I do find a lot of it to be fairly boring, though I can appreciate the musicianship of some them.

Would Spirit of Radio by Rush be classified as Prog Rock? I love that one but hate Rush in general.

Apropos of nothing, when I was going through a divorce I woke up next to a woman that looked like Geddy Lee and fled Quincy at top speed.
