If one component of punk—loosely described as the Ramones wing—was about getting rock back to its 1950s roots, that entire class of originators/promoters were elevated or restored after the self-seriousness of the 60s turned into 70s dinosaur rock.

Legs McNeill said the only decent stuff prior to the Ramones was Chuck Berry and the first few Beatles albums. And he's Mr Self Consciously First Wave Punk.

Yup, he and Lester Bangs were huge promoters of the idea of punk being the virtue of simplicity and directness. Rock went astray went it began to think of itself as art and complex and of appealing to the mind rather than the body. Yet Bangs also loved Lou Reed, so that's … inconsistent.

That Stalinist stuff was all a bit silly really in retrospect. A clearing of the decks was needed but there was too much great stuff released before 1976 to take it seriously.

But it was the nature of the beast, wasn't it? I look back to my own discovery of punk and alternative music. At that moment, everything else had to be renounced as bullshit. Napster and BitTorrent were a godsend for letting me get back freely all those old records I haughtily sold off on principle and to pay for new, more pure records.

This is the universal experience for us, isn't it? I sold so many things that I would like to have back now.
