You've gained the trust of the Secret Society of Prostitutes to learn their code, eh?

Too many to mention. Bolan/Bowie/Roxy/Mott/Flaming Groovies. As for proto punk well they only got called that after punk had happened and people talked about influence. As for the dinosaur bands punk didn't harm any of them it's all myth. Floyd/Zeppelin/Yes all carried on and sold out huge venues and made even more extravagant albums. The year zero punk thing is the biggest pile of nonsense ever. All the punk bands stole riffs from the previous generation and before. Punk only lasted about 18 months before bands moved on with their sound.WestwayKid wrote: ↑08 Nov 2018, 7:35am"No Elvis, Beatles, or the Rolling Stones..."
This week's topic is bands/artists from the 60's and 70's (I'll also throw in the 50's) who did alright when punk came and shook up rock and roll in the 70's. Basically - they were not written off as dinosaurs and were embraced/respected by the "new wave" of young bands that washed over the world of music in 1976 and onward.
Proto-punk bands don't count.

I don’t know how to break it to you, but I’m afraid your son Flex is suffering from Smashmouth of the dick.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
It's been awhile since I posted a new opinion/question. I was just thinking of my cousin (technically my 1st cousin once removed...but only 15 years older than me) and how he was the one who really shaped and inspired my love of music. Curious to know if any of you had a similar person in your lives.
He was a typical mid-America teen in the late-70's. Led Zeppelin, Starship, and stuff like that...but then he discovered punk. One of my earliest memories is seeing a poster of the 1978 Winterland concert on his bedroom wall. It was through him that I was first exposed to The Pistols and The Clash and Black Flag and Husker Du and The Smiths and on and on. His record collection was always available to me. I'd go over to his house and borrow and tape whatever I wanted.
He went through his period of musical Stalinism that many of us went through, but as he got older he dropped that and I know I was definitely inspired to do the same because of him. I could go over to his house and we'd spin London Calling followed by Going for the One by Yes.
He passed away very suddenly in early 2017 from an undetected heart condition - not unlike Joe. In fact, he passed just after getting home from walking his dog.
I'm very thankful to have had someone like him in my life for many reasons, but his generosity and enthusiasm in sharing his love of music has truly shaped my life for the better!!

Nope, nothing like that, really. Instead, my musical tastes have just been fueled by curiosity and reading music magazines/books. And, of course, recommendations from people here.

My brother helped me discover a lot of great stuff, but then he became a Deadhead. So I had to kill him.

I can understand becoming a Deadhead back in the 60s—people got fucked up and latched on to all kinds of weird things in the spirit of the times. But there is no acceptable reason for anyone born after, say, 1963 to find that stuff palatable.
