The Grammys?

Post by WestwayKid »

For all of you who do not live in the US: do other countries care about them? I really don’t...yet, when something I like is nominated I care because I hope they win. Case in point. I LOVED The War on Drugs last album. It is up for best rock album (which is a bizarre category for them to be in). They’re up against Reagan era relics like Metallica and pretty boy metal Queens of the Stone Age. They don’t belong in this category...but that is getting away from my point. Do awards mean anything? I think got a band like War on Drugs they might. Might mean more exposure in the short term, but in the end - they go back to being obscure. Just crazy how they hype music award shows in America (and we have about 15 of them),

A few weeks ago, in another thread, I posted this, from John Ralston Saul's The Doubter's Companion and wholly endorse the sentiment:
Award Show: Mechanism by which the members of a given profession attempt to give themselves the attributes of the pre-modern ruling classes—the military, aristocracy and priesthood—by assigning various orders, decorations and medals to each other.

These shows are a superficial expression of corporatism. As with the pre-modern classes, their awards relate principally to relationships within the profession. Each time the words “I want to thank” are used by someone being decorated, they indicate a relationship based on power. The awards have little to do with that corporation’s relationship to the outside world—what you might call the public—or for that matter with quality.

Yeah, pretty much sums it up. What gets me is that they make such a big show out of it. It’s like so many local civic organizations. They have their annual awards banquet at the local Holiday Inn Express (dinner is chicken with some sort of gravy to make it seem fancy alongside some wilted vegetables) and the same people just get revolving awards. “You got best artist last year? Huh. How do you feel about best pop artist this year?”

...and then War on Drugs WINS! I’n shocked. Little known group from Philly - but such a great album. I’ve heard so much in my lifetime that it is hard to move me - but their album hit me in the gut!

How do we figure this into the equation, my friend?

I was so happy when they won that I wept a bit. Complete outsiders who won. Yeah, false flag. Tossing a bone...but so happy for them. Adam Granduciel Is a really good dude. I love his music and while mainstream America won’t care or remember...I feel like this is a legit win for good music.

Both of my Grammies are long-dead, so why would I go watch them? :hmm:

Never heard of them.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Hello,

I've hated the f***in's grammies since 1979 when A Taste of Honey, riding their song Boogie Oogie Oogie, won the grammy for Best New Artist over the Cars and Elvis Costello (I think I post this same thought each year around grammy time).

If the Cars and/or EC were even up for the nomination that was your win there.
