Down in the shadow of the penitentiary,
out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go
I'll raise you this.

Sometimes, it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull
And cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull

Yeah that's a good one, but the whole BItUSA song makes me want to throw up sometimes, just to get something outta me. Don't know what or why. Something "sublime" I guess. Have a field day with this post, Bruce haters

A very overplayed song at the time. Sadly misinterpreted by many. When you look at the lyrics from the returning Vet angle it's incredibly poignant. Fantastic snare sound.

It's weird. I've always thought of BItUSA as one of the greatest "love songs" ever. Maybe for anyone who's ever been fucked around with, been denied or ignored. In the USA.

Someone who loves his/her country and yet has the realisation that it's not all it should be.

Yup. That has always been my take on the song. Bruce does a great job putting it into words.

"In the intro to Everything Counts by Depeche Mode, you can hear a quiet rendition of the song's melody. Gives me chills," said JennyB, the only DM fanatic on IMCT (except for maybe Rattie).

Also, when Bowie sings the whole "Don't Fake it Baby" verse in Moonage Daydream, it just does something to me.
JB I really do own all their albums. And yes to Moonage Daydream.
That's why I love you. :)

I rep harder for Modern Love than anyone I know, but I think it has several sublime moments. Including
"I know when to stay in"
"But I try... I try"
And the echoing backing vocals through the choruses.
I actually rank ML in my top 10 Bowie. I love that song.

I'd like to point out that the only time I've ever seen him do it live (of the 12 times I've seen him) was when I saw him play in Prague.

Apropos of nothing, that must have been an incredible experience for you - seeing one of your idols in the land of your ancestors. Glad you got to experience that.

It was pretty neat to see the difference in crowds. I was hoping it'd be like the maniacal Italian or Spanish crowds, but still cool. I went with my dad. At one point, Bruce asked the audience, "anyone here from New Jersey?" to which my dad was the lone "Yes!"

I'd like to point out that I was refering to radio play and other places than that of Bruce playing it live. And I'm jealous I wished I'd seen him 12 times.
