nice image. (i have a similar memory of listening to my import copy of Sandinista! for the first time while stoned and decorating the Christmas tree and thinking 'this record sounds like a Christmas tree!' yeah, i was baked).

never listened to Meditations on cans, but i love how Elvin is on one channel, Ali on the other, and same with Saunders and Trane.

Glad to see this thread regenerated (not least because Gene still hasn't answered the Mingus question from last page. My anwer: eh).

Been listening to this lately, thinking about putting together a group to see how slowly we can play it before people leave the venue.

Grant Green also has two more uptempo albums, Matador and Solid, which are both great. Highly recommended.

I'm currently listening to Freddie Hubbard's Here to Stay. Not his absolute best, but a very pleasant listen.

Now I've switched to A Love Supreme, since it's been ages since I last listened. Some things are classics for a reason, and it's not just because of popular opinion. Dang. Elvin Jones is incredible.

if you haven't heard it, check out the deluxe version of A Love Supreme for the 2nd disc, which has the only live playing of the full album (plus a couple alt takes from the album proper). the gig was played in Neuport, Belgium - right on the Atlantic. i was there in '08 ( the hotel was literally a stones throw from the sea). you hear the announcer (Radio Luxembourg maybe?) announcing the band in French, and the whole suite just insinuates and burns, more so than the album. extremely vital Coltrane.

and another thing from my Euro trip in '08 - one late night/early morning (fuck knows what time it was) in Monschau, Germany on the Belgian border - on the little clock-radio in our hotel room, i heard the entire A Love Supreme re-mixed with monks doing Gregorian Chant. it should have helped see me off to bed, but had the opposite effect. that in fact was Radio Luxembourg. motherfuckers can still do that shit on the radio? it was absolutely riveting.

Whoa, that sounds awesome. A quick Google search didn't pull anything up, but I'm definitely going to keep searching for that.

Sanders has a great album called "Summun, Bukmun, Umyun" which is notable because it stays in that laid back, spiritual style without ever going into some of the more aggressive free stuff. Very nice for evening listening.
