It's a steal though. Johansen singing on the verses and Rotten just mimics the same phrasing.Silent Majority wrote:"Cheese 'n' chalk."

The Dolls 10 seconds in from the start and the Pistols 40 seconds in. Phrasing/guitar/drums.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. Johansen singing on the verses and Rotten just mimics the same phrasing.Silent Majority wrote:"Cheese 'n' chalk."

Agreed, my point is that Rotten was being disingenuous to deny any influence from the Dolls.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. Johansen singing on the verses and Rotten just mimics the same phrasing.Silent Majority wrote:"Cheese 'n' chalk."

Just putting it out for discussion.

Re: Dolls/Pistols
I not sure that is strictly correct, I mean if that was so then he couldn't of sang "New York". I've always thought as deliberately snide as those lyrics are the real target was always McLaren.Silent Majority wrote:Agreed, my point is that Rotten was being disingenuous to deny any influence from the Dolls.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. And 40 years ago for me as well; in fact, aside from Lydon's never-heard-this-sort-of-raving-before voice, that's the reason I took to the Pistols so immediately - they sounded so much like the Dolls in their musical attack and guitar tones and drum push.

Rotten was just trying to get a rise/piss off/provoke people - remember the times (those of us old enough!).

The very idea that there would be literally any outside influence in his look, his sound, or his personality is impossible for him to fathom.Dr. Medulla wrote:Lydon has a perverse belief that he is an entirely self-invented man.Silent Majority wrote:Agreed, my point is that Rotten was being disingenuous to deny any influence from the Dolls.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. Yep. Being a working class Anglo/Irish dude who was kinda pissed off at the status quo in the mid-'70s was such a unique stance. Dog forbid he should actually dig any music...Wolter wrote:The very idea that there would be literally any outside influence in his look, his sound, or his personality is impossible for him to fathom.Dr. Medulla wrote:Lydon has a perverse belief that he is an entirely self-invented man.Silent Majority wrote:Agreed, my point is that Rotten was being disingenuous to deny any influence from the Dolls.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. At least Shane MacGowan wears it well and with dignity.
EDIT: which is not to say that Lydon doesn't have his own sense of dignity, just that he's stingy with his musical influences.

Re: Dolls/Pistols
Nah he has acknowledged plenty of influences down the years. They are more prevalent in PiL than the Pistols of course. Peter Hammil/Can/Heavy Dub reggae etc. This is where he had Wobble and Levene with similar fields of vision compared to the narrow minded rock 'n' roll view of the Pistols.Wolter wrote:The very idea that there would be literally any outside influence in his look, his sound, or his personality is impossible for him to fathom.Dr. Medulla wrote:Lydon has a perverse belief that he is an entirely self-invented man.Silent Majority wrote:Agreed, my point is that Rotten was being disingenuous to deny any influence from the Dolls.Marky Dread wrote:It's a steal though. I doubt the Dolls inspired Rotten very much to be honest as they were faves of the rest of the group with others like The Who/Small Faces/Faces. Sure the two songs I posted prove the inspiration but the songs arrangements and structures would be down to Jones/Cook/Matlock alone. Rotten hated all the Chuck Berry stuff but in the Pistols he was stuck with what they wanted hence all the snide put downs in "New York" as Thunders was Jones guitar hero.

I keep thinking my phone is broken when I click on this thread and don't see poll results at the top that completely humiliate Heston.
