We're in a gnarly windstorm today so feeling a bit mellower. Here's a secret, sneaky-good christmas song that has somehow been overlooked in the Canon but is an all-timer for un-cynical, non-irony christmas music:

Flex's 25 Days of Christmas (Songs), Day 15: Ella Fitzgerald - The Secret Of Christmas

Original Release: The Secret of Christmas b/w The Christmas Song
Year: 1959

Interestingly, almost everywhere refers to this as the b-side to The Christmas Song but when I actually look up the single it seems like Secret was the original a-side and maybe Christmas Song just became the more popular of the two tracks. Anyways, this probably got overlooked because it didn't appear digitally until an expanded edition of Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas was released in 2005ish. Ella at Christmas is always great.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

I can't believe it's take until now to share this gem:

Flex's 25 Days of Christmas (Songs), Day 16: Angry Snowmans - I Love Christmas In the City

Original Release: What We Do Is Festive
Year: 2011

I mean, fuck yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Love it! I'm sure Lee Ving approves.

lmao that two inch winky album cover.

Flex's 25 Days of Christmas (Songs), Day 17: The White Stripes - Candy Cane Children

Original Release: Merry Christmas From...
Year: 2002

A pretty early single from the Stripes. Jack White just announced a tour for 2022 so that got me thinking about this single. The b-side is a reading of gify of the magi (one of my favorite holiday stories) and a version of Silent Night. Will probably share it in a future year.

Hope this hasn't been posted before but either way it's great.

I totally forgot I met Richard Simmons once. At LAX when we were visiting SOCAL while still living in Virginia. He was basically just hanging out outside of baggage claim shouting basically aphorisms and motivational lines at people: "looking good!" "hey hey hey, happy Sunday!"
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
