Just had the BB's on shuffle and the original version of Hey Little Tomboy came on and wow - nothing as horrible as that piece of crap. The whole spoken word bridge where they're ogling this "little tomboy" is like the soundtrack of the rape van. So, so bad...and so depressing to hear Brian very much in the mix...

Re: The Thread to Ruminate About Mike Love's Rape Van
The Beach Boys are apparently playing the Milwaukee County Sports Complex this summer. Not exactly a high profile venue - but seriously - almost overnight the entire area has been peppered with signs promoting the show. You can't go a mile or two without seeing Mike, Bruce, and a cast of thousands smiling and imploring you to buy tickets. Speaking of tickets...we're talking $75 before facility fees for a facility that doesn't even have a stage!? I think they just set up an outdoor stage in one of the athletic fields - so if you're sitting in the back - you're probably not seeing much. Honestly, at this point...I wish people would just stop financially supporting Mike Love. I see both sides: there are those who applaud him for keeping the summer alive...but I also feel like he's truly cheapening the band's legacy by dragging them from county fairs to temporary stages set up in soccer fields to Indian casinos and then back to county fairs.

Mike Love observation: I love the attempt at clever editing in the Kokomo sax solo that tries to obscure the fact that Mike has no idea how to play the sax solo.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Mike Love response: Kokomo went to #1 in the US and sold over a million copies.

I'll be honest, I'm impressed with the Beach Boys' aggressive touring schedule that he manages to fit in solo shows as well. Looks like they are playing Belfast on the 18th and then Reno on the 22nd.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑07 Jun 2018, 10:54amMike Love is playing a bar on Nantucket called the Chicken Box. Also, I didn't know Zach Braff, Ed O'Neill and Geddy Lee are in the band now.

Re: The Thread to Ruminate About Mike Love's Rape Van
The Mike Love Boys put on a pretty good show when I saw them around Christmas '16 (I think) but they put on a GREAT show when I saw them at the Paramount in Denver last year. Part of it was just the venue - one of Denver's best smallish music venues vs a somewhat sterile generic performing arts complex, but still. He played one solo song at both shows and they were both awful. Pretty good live takes on Summer in Paradise tho, which may be of interest to Hoy.
I cannot imagine what a Mike Love solo concert would be like, except terrible. But I also can't imagine not trying to see the shitshow if I had the chance.

Pretty weird that he still makes them play a non single from their worst selling album that is long out of print.
Here's a sort of recent setlist:

I wonder what kind of backing he has for the BB covers.

Throwing the logo in at the bottom is such a devilish fuck you to anyone who, like, loves the Beach Boys.

I’ve seen The Mike Love Beach Boys Starship twice, and yeah, he sucks, but the musicians are tight and the songs are fun.Flex wrote: ↑07 Jun 2018, 11:10amThe Mike Love Boys put on a pretty good show when I saw them around Christmas '16 (I think) but they put on a GREAT show when I saw them at the Paramount in Denver last year. Re: The Thread to Ruminate About Mike Love's Rape Van
Good way to put it. He's got a solid band (musically and vocally) - but is it The Beach Boys? From what I understand, he has to have permission from the stakeholders of Brother Records (BRI) to tour under the name. Mike is a stakeholder, as is Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and the estate of Carl Wilson. Bruce dumped his shares before he bailed in 1971/72 and Dennis sold his to cover debts before he passed away. Long story short - as much as fans might hate on Mike Love for "abusing" the name - he has the okay from the likes of Brian Wilson to do so. Brian gets a cut of whatever Mike and his gang make out on the road.Wolter wrote: ↑07 Jun 2018, 12:39pmI’ve seen The Mike Love Beach Boys Starship twice, and yeah, he sucks, but the musicians are tight and the songs are fun.Flex wrote: ↑07 Jun 2018, 11:10amThe Mike Love Boys put on a pretty good show when I saw them around Christmas '16 (I think) but they put on a GREAT show when I saw them at the Paramount in Denver last year.
