Pogues

Postby Billy Joel » 28 Jul 2010, 10:48pm

Hey, look, I'm talking about The Pogues again. I wonder if SM will show up?!

Anyway, I'm feeling nostalgic so I've been looking for some good footage of the Pogues since their 2001 reunion but youtube is turning up nothing but cell phone bullshit. Anybody know if there's any quality or pro-shot footage from the Pogues reunion? I can't believe that in 9 years none of their concerts were filmed for festival live broadcasts or anything like that.

The first USA reunion shows in 2006 were professionally filmed for a DVD that is yet-to-be released. I got interviewed by a nice lady with an expensive looking camera after the March 16th show. Should turn up sometime. I think they had some problems getting legal stuff taken care of, from what I last heard.

The suspense!

Apparently, much of that pro-shot stuff is unusable, because Shane can't work with the kind of lights discernable filming requires, even in shades. You'll notice his area onstage is usually pretty murky. It's a shame, I think there's a decent sized market for a DVD release. I'd certainly relish new product.

I'd rather remember them as they were first time around.

By the way, did anyone here ever see the Pogues with Joe fronting them? One of the best nights of my life.

Having listened to a good chunk of live stuff between the 80s and now, the reunion tours sound better to my ears, both because the band has their shit together, and because songs from the first two albums are played by an 8 piece band instead of 5 or whatever. Stuff from the first two albums just sounds better. And as a matter of preference I prefer Shane's grizzled and ruined voice to his younger voice - a bit richer, and it fits the tone of the songs better, I think. And it's not like he could ever conventionally sing anyway.

I've listened to huge chunks too, and I prefer his younger, more vital voice. I know the band got better, more professional etc., but I just don't like the "ruined voice" vibe.

Of course he could sing in the conventional sense. He had one of the best rasping voices of all time. Now he doesn't, and when he gets his shit together and avoids the high notes, he can still kick out the jams and sometimes sound richer than before. I'll concede that Rainy Night In Soho sounds better with the deeper voice and grainier than ever delivery, but he doesn't have the pipes for something like Kitty or Dark Streets of London.

He's a busted flush. Maybe if you like gnarly blues music you can get something from it.

I don't see much use to those great lyrics when they all come out as a slurred groan.
