Just sent these links to Mick who was very pleased to hear about them. He said that run was their height.

Thats great that Mick enjoys them, and let him how much we love these shows! I really agree with him too, they sound like a band right at their peak.

Later 87 they really hit it. Listened through the Santa Cruz show again and theres a big difference to just how some of these songs sound. Even with the gigs being just about over a month apart. Mick's intro part to Hollywood Boulevard is a big thing that I love, A Party sounds extremely well developed, plus I love the nod to "Battle of New Orleans." Beatbox however is my favorite from these sets. I just said it a few comments ago but I love the extended version.

Mick won't actually hear them until tomorrow or Tuesday when his tech guy burns them to CD but he was very pleased to hear about them, and especially liked that they originated with fans.

On my computer I've always kept the Santa Cruz show as my '87 because it has the best sound as well, but the Irving Plaza run was the biggest buzz.

Hey River - care to share the lyrics for this song? And thanks for posting the mp3 - will try to get it soon.
Alright, heres my attempt. Some of the parts I'm not completely sure on, its just what these bad ears of mine have picked up. Lyrics come from the 25th of the Irving shows. From the sound of it, these seem to be the "complete" lyrics. I'm sure theres more based on that 12 minute version with Joe.

Sometimes, sometimes
Your love goes in threes
Sometimes, sometimes
You see the sun through the trees
Both times, your mind
Turn like a steering wheel
Ninety-nine, lonely miles
Till you can strike your deal
Money dreams, money dreams
All that you buy in your sleep
Sunny stings (?), darling
That California beach
Tell me why, tell me why
Those motorcycle cops wanna die
Looking good, looking fine
The sun is high in the sky

Well its a long way back to your laundromat
Got no protection, rock the city block out (?)
With the law and order, north of the border
Watch the people running down the road (?)

Its hit and run, hit and run
Got speeding tickets to the sun
You need a gun, from where I come
Shaky city on the run
You city rats, you city rats
No harm in shooting up my clothes (?)
Baseball bats, silk hats
I'm down to war alone (?)

Well its a long way back...

In my time, in my time
I drank a little hobo wine
But now that I'm, in my prime
The jukeboxes don't run on dimes
I thought I wrote, I thought I wrote
I'd never get no near a hole (?)
You say to me, you say to me
The road ain't what it used to be

Well its a long way back...

Pass the silk, pass the silk
Johnny Walker drinks whiskey and milk (?)
In my time, its rain or shine
The sadist dude is losing his mind
For fifty grand, fifty grand
Thats fifty grand laid in your hand
There ain't no man, in the land
Gets up and walks from fifty grand
I've been there, I've been there
Standing at the top of the stairs
When you're high, better wave bye-bye
The stars are always falling from the sky
Two thousand miles, two thousand miles
I need to reach it on my tiles (?)
Really strange, for why (?)
Cause you gave me a place to hide
Go with mine, go with mine
Cadillacs are rolling off the line
Hey boy, hey boy
Don't you have a hammer to your door
You can't dance, you can't sing
Can't get a girl a diamond ring
Making books (?), where he smokes
And he ain't going where you've been

Sometimes, sometimes
Your love goes in three
Sometimes, sometimes
You see the sun through the trees
Both times, your mind
Turn like a steering wheel
ninety-nine, lonely miles
Till you can strike your deal
Sometimes, sometimes
That's amazing - thanks so much. Wish I could help out with some of the question marks, but I'm generally horrible at deciphering lyrics and this is no exception. The only thing I think I can add with any confidence is that I think it is "Gold mine, Gold mine" rather than "Go with mine".

Listened through again, and yes you are correct. I now here gold mine, gold mine. I also got rid of a few question marks as I'm certain now that those are the lyrics.

Okay, based on River's excellent foundation, I've slapped on the headphones and taken a stab at the lyrics to the full 10:44 studio version, which does feature more words from the rarely pithy Joe and, no I don't have the authority to share (do I look like James Comey)? There's still a word or three that are hard to figure. I'll give it another shot soon to try and clean them up.

Sometimes, sometimes
Good love comes in threes
Sometimes, sometimes
You see the sun through the trees

Both times, in your mind
Turn like a steering wheel

Money dreams, money dreams
Oh let your body sleep
Sunny schemes, and darling
That California beach

Tell me why, tell me why
All motorcycle cops wanna die
Looking good, looking fine
The sun is high in the sky

Well it's a long way back to your laundromat
Got no protection from the city crossroads
With the law and order, north of the border
Motor city people running down the road

Hit and run, hit and run
Got speeding tickets to the sun
You need a gun, from where I come
In shaking city on the run

City rats, city rats
No more shooting up my clothes
Baseball bats, silk hats
Manhattan overload

Well it's a long way back to your laundromat
And your holy pool hall by the tracks
With the law and order, north of the border
The wise guy people running, that's a fact

My time, in my time
I drank a lick of hobo wine
Now that I'm in my prime
Them jukeboxes just don't run on dimes

How far I roam, how far I roam
I never get no near a home
Now say to me, say to me
The road ain't what it used to be

The wise guys keep on running, that's a fact

Well it's a long way back to your laundromat
Got no protection from the city block out
It's the law and order, north of the border
Poor old gypsys keep on running way down the road

Hats of silk, hats of silk
Charlie Parker drinks whiskey and milk
All the time, rain or shine
This Soho dude is losing his mind

Fifty grand, fifty grand
That's fifty grand laying in your hand
Ain't no man, in the land

Stop for gas, stop for gas
Get off the stagecoach at the pass
Gold mine, Gold mine
Cadillacs are rolling off the line

Elmore, Elmore
Tell me what you're running for
What the hell, Elmore
Don't you have a handle to your door

His time, in his time
Elmore had a lick of hobo wine
Way to go, way to go
But where I'm going I don't know

Crazy dude, this crazy dude
Got up and walked out on his group
The way to be misunderstood
I think this time he ain't no good

My time, in my time
I had a lick of hobo wine
Take it from me, take it from me
The road ain't what it used to be

I been there, I been there
Standing at the top of the stairs

Really strange, but why
Did she give me a place to hide?

He's a fool, he's a fool
Don't teach you nothing at his school

Why can't the man be cool

A lot of Detroit references in there. Seems like the Motor City (also "shakin' city", which would seem to be an MC5 reference) wise guys, hobos, gypsys and hitmen are going back and forth into Canada. Also the hobo hitman's name a nod to Elmore Leonard. Interestingly, Mick's mom lives in the Upper Peninsula and is (or maybe now was) friendly with Al Capone's brother's widow. I wouldn't be surprised if Mick had a hand in this lyric too.
