Re: Clashing again
As it is, though, US S/T is my desert island album. So, you know, splitting hairs.

Re: Clashing again
Half of GEER is excellent. Probably the self mythologising gets a bit much at time. "All the Young Punks (New Boots and Contracts)" has a stunning tune and some great guitar playing from Mick but is let down by it's hamfisted story. I would still prefer it to sound like the single/B-sides that pred...

Re: Clashing again
I'd say if it wasn't for Sound System I wouldn't have listened to s/t for the guts of 20 years. Doesn't mean I dont value it highly though. I physically have to ration listening to LC for fear the unthinkable happens and I end up playing it out. And I can't recall the last time I listened to GEER r...

Re: "Punk" elitism...
He's more or less just singling out some of the punk bands who've had commercial success, so it kind of strikes me as arbitrary -- why are the Clash worn out but not the Pistols? Why Green Day and not Blink-182? Why Rancid and not the Offspring? It's just a silly opinion piece to generate some ad re...

Re: Clash Songs Ranked
I think Hitsville was a regret thing with the Clash and an acknowledgement they may have been wrong. It really is a great lyric, like ABBA with a conscience. OK here's a thought imagine if Blondie had released Hitsville U.K.(USA) as a single. Sure fire number 1. The Clash = not a pop group. The ava...

Re: Clash Songs Ranked
I get that it's just opinions and all, but I'm trying to wrap my head around his bashing of the S! production on many of my favorite Clash songs, while describing Hitsville as having "a spectacular, spacious mix, with any number of delightful sonic touches that repay many listenings." Anyway: ...

Re: Strummer Deep Cuts
For me, X-Ray Style (the song) is a superlative Strummer work, up there with a handful of Clash songs. One of my favorite songs of all time. It's the only song from the Rock Art that strikes me as full-stop brilliant.

Re: The last time you heard CtC.
This Is England is brilliant, just executed poorly with the drum machine etc. Such a great lyric. I can forgive the "this is how we feel" line when we have that great last verse. I fail to see how anyone who likes the Clash doesn't like Three Card Trick. Even with the drum machine it's better than ...

Re: London is Burning
I'm not sure I can go with the alternative vocalist angle, lead vocalist anyway, it was still a Strummer record and had to stay that way, regardless of whatever material had been laid down. I do often wonder what type of album it might have been had Joe lived to see it through. It had to follow the...
